More about The Sands - Sea Front Apartments
heaven by the sea
stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment with sea view. a big plus point is your own parking space in the on-site secure car park. the apartments are equipped to a very high standard , they are advertised as luxurious & we all agreed that this was a very fitting term to use. Sands is right by the north beach & the view over the sea & with the castle just along the shoreline is stunning. The staff were very friendly & informative. The Sands is a great asset to Scarborough, & we will certainly return.
Don't rest on your laurels!
The apartments are first class, as others have commented, but there are a few teething troubles which need ironing out to keep this as a 5* experience.
I have just returned from my second stay, and was disappointed that the 'seaview' apartment this time actually looked out over the road (noisy traffic) to a grassy bank where teenagers gathered each evening to drink. We could see the sea, but not as well as from the apartments which actually faced the sea.
It was also a concern that on arrival this time we could get no response when pressing the entry phone - and had to walk up a flight of stairs with our suitcases (and elderly mother-in-law) to the reception/management suite. We discovered that there was no safe in the apartment...one was promised, but never materialised. Also, our bins weren't emptied during our short stay, and we only received the weather forecast on one day (this is the same as during our previous, longer stay). Last time, the toilet was leaking - reported on day one, but still not attended to by day 6 when we left.
The waffle gowns are only for the Master bedroom, as are the Elemis toiletries (this is not totally clear from their description) and I agree that this seems a little mean, given the prices charged. In a hotel, the toiletries are renewed when needed – it is necessary to purchase extras at the Sands. The little sachets of tea and coffee are also not replenished, and the tissue box only had 2 tissues in it each time.
Despite all this, I still think it is a great place to be , but, considering the prices, the 'little things' need to be attended to.
Not as good as they think.
Stayed in a one bed flat. Well equipped, but very hot. Would be totally unacceptable during a hot July / Aigust. No air con. No WiFi which one would expect in a 5 star.
Good parking. A bit of a way from the town centre. One restaurant in walking distance... BUT book six years in advance if you want a table!!!
Well equipped in terms of TV, kitchen etc. Two views available. One sea front and one the car park a the back. Take your choice. However the flats that face the car park are noisey as you can hear all of the noise from the surrounding flats and also people getting into their cars. the sound really travels.
Good, but not that good. One week here more expensive than a 5 star villa (with air con) a flight and a car in Majorca at the same period.
excellent apartment stayed for 6 days , modern , clean , spacious, amazing views of sea. well equiped gym which we used daily. Bins were emptied daily, had weather report every morning which mentioned new guests etc - added personal touch. Our 5 year old daughter loved it esp having her own TV in bedroom and games consoles. weather was genarally good. Staff were polite and helpful .
Welcome pack was a nice touch, plenty of shops near by to stock up on groceries,
Only thing i would have wanted was wifi but other then that great holiday.
The Sands - Comfortable, Stylish, Beautiful. Go on, pamper yourself!!
My wife and I plus our 1year old baby boy stayed at The Sands whilst visiting Scarborough to attend an old school friend's wedding. Our little boy is a nightmare for waking up during the night. He'll happily have us all out of bed unless he has his own room! So we needed to locate a Hotel Suite at a reasonable cost. But we wanted something marginally more upmarket than an Old School B&B with coverlets and floral wallpaper so the price was coming in around about 200 quid.
A lucky web search brought up The Sands.
We do use self catering villas and cottages pretty frequently so the apparent quality from the photos in the web brochure versus the cost of £220 seemed too good to be true. However I am very happy to report the complex exceeded expectation in every way. It IS VERY contemporary with it's ultra modern, "uber chic" fittings and architecture. There's swipe cards, talking lifts, built in gymnasiums, private covered parking, automatic lights etc etc... This is no log cabin or country cottage and i saw an old couple during my stay who described it as all "a bit soulless". But in my humble opinion i found The Sands to be the finest self catering accomodation i have ever had the fortune to sample.
Upon arrival i was instantly impressed with the level of security. A private car park accessible only by swipe card, each apartment has an allocated space. We had to call the concierge via the intercom and they checked our name against the arrivals list. i had been a little bothered about leaving my car parked on the promenade so this was a load off my mind straight away. The lady on reception was very polite and helpful, took us to our accomodation and instructed us on how to use the swipe cards on the many security doors along the way. She also talked us through the apartment features too, taking time out to show us how the kitchen appliances, balcony doors, door locks and TV's all worked.
Room 207 has a large balcony and a fantastic sea view perfectly visible from the couch and dining room table so i would wholeheartedly recommend it. The decor is an interior designer's wet dream and i could not question the quality on display in the electrical appliances, the gorgeous solid oak furniture or the robust and comfortable couches & beds. Quality is the key word actually, being a DIY fanatic i cant help but zone in on workmanship and materials used in The Sands. The bathrooms are nothing short of a work of art, the tiling in both the main and en suite is perfection. The windows and doors throughout - whilst not triple glazed - are pretty much completely soundproof. The balcony sliding doors and the dining area windows particularly. The doors are all solid and most have an integrated draught strip so once a door is shut the room is again almost soundproof. It's like you're in your own perfectly decorated, incredibly stylish bubble - with all the mod cons - and you can gaze out on the sea in complete comfort.
We received a very comprehensive Welcome Pack including tea, coffee, milk, bread, jam etc. The bedrooms contained luxurious waffle weave dressing gowns and the bathrooms sported a selection of Elemis beauty products. The stereo system had an Ipod dock and played MP3 as standard, the Samsung plasma TV was a joy to behold. There was even a set of binoculars sitting on the window sill with a tag attached explaining landmarks visible from our balcony. None of this was expected in a self catering apartment and were definitely the little touches that pushed The Sands from Brilliant to Perfect.
Any gripes at all? Well the smoke detector is installed in the most moronic place possible. Try cooking anything that generates as much steam or smoke as a bacon butty and you'll struggle. I even contemplated whipping the batteries out the damn thing but it's connected to the mains. Next time i think i'll block the sensors with some damp kitchen roll or something....
Other than that my only moan is at myself - that i only booked two nights! I was out for a drink one night, then at the wedding the second so only got a day really to enjoy the place. We are already booking a week long return to The Sands later in the year so we can properly chill out. Then i'll give this well built, gorgeous looking, reasonably priced, fantastic complex the time it deserves. Well done Scarborough and well done The Sands.
The Best of the Best but very unusual garden view!!
We have just returned yesterday (18th July) after a very enjoyable 2 night stay. The fixtures and fitting in this apartment were absolutely fabulous. We have stayed in many 5* apartments in USA and did not expect the same quality, if not better in this country. Everything in the apartments were top of the range from the furnishings to the kitchen utensils. The staff were most helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had wanted a 3 bed, sea front apartment but apparently there was only one of these and that was fully booked but, we were told there was 'a very nice 3 bedroom apartment with garden? view'. We booked this apartment thinking a garden view would not be so bad. This was a most unusual garden we had ever seen. The 'garden' was painted green and growing some very nice cars in various sizes and colours. We were very disappointed that the beautiful garden view we were promised to us for our stay, was in fact the apartments car park. I would kindly advise the lettings agent/web site, to please be more honest and tell future clients that they have a sea view or car park view, There was not much enjoyment sitting on our balcony in the evening looking out over a car park.
Perfect family base for exploring Scarborough with young children
The sands is perfect, everything has been thought of and the view is breathtaking. I am not going to repeat what past reviewers have said, instead I will just mention a few things that make the apartments good value for families.
-secure free parking
-having your own washing mashine/dishwasher/fridge/microwave (great when having to make up baby milk)
-having 2 bathrooms
-a very safe balcony which is covered in plastic perspex so young children cant poke anything through any gaps, yet you still get a good view.
-buckets and spades in the apartment
-xbox and wii plus a large selection of family dvds to rent for free
-free travel cot and highchair
- a selection of takeaway menus/restaurant information/taxi numbers in your apartment
- a nisa shop/ice cream parlour/bar/cafe on-site
- on the doorstep and within easy walking distance of miniature railway, peasholm park, boating lake, indoor swimming pool and beach
- discount vouchers for Yorkshire attractions given on check-in
- secure access to apartments
This trully was one of the nicest places I have ever stayed in. I can't recommend it enough.
Wish we'd have booked an extra night
We have just returned from a wonderful two night stay at The Sands. We have a four year old and a two year old and they absolutely loved it. So many positive things to say:
* fabulous day on the beach which is literally five paces from the apartment block. Great to be able to get straight back to the room.
*apartment (two bed) was very spacious, very clean and very well equipped
*North Bay is beautiful and away from the hustle and bustle of South Bay although buses run regularly from the doorstep
*Peasholm Park, railway and boating lake are within minutes walking distance of The Sands
*very secure Parking spaces
*staff were very friendly
*had a fantastic curry from the "Scarborough Tandoori" South Bay
*North Bay is very picturesque and given that we had a lovely days weather on the beach it looked, and felt, like we were abroad
*lovely beach huts to hire
*although the cost is more than many hotels the quality and size of accommodation makes it worth while.
We will certainly be returning for another weekend although next time it will be for three nights instead of two.
the apartments are superb, spotlessly clean, fully equipped to extremely high standard.
hen the sea mist finally went the view was breathtaking.
We stayed at the sands for 2 nights nights with our 11month old baby and had a fantastic time. The appartments are imaculate and I would definately go back.
