Is there any coach/train connection from Whitby to Durham?
by christine.j
I was planning to take the coach from York to Whitby, go back to York, and the next day take a train up to Durham. But I would be easier to make this trip a triangle: take the coach to Whitby, go to Durham and then take the train back to York. However, I couldn't find any train for the Whitby-Durham leg. National Express also has no direct coach.
Does anyone know if there is some other public transportation between the two towns?
Thank you for any information.
Christine

There is a train Whitby-Middlesborough but Middlesborough-Durham would still involve a change at Darlington if you want to stick to trains.
Arriva North East also runs buses Whitby-Middlesborough. http://www.arriva.co.uk/northeast
Best bet (only 1 change) could be to go to Middlesborough and then change to bus X1 (towards Newcastle) to Durham. Check this site for times:

Thanks a lot for your help. I had a quick look at the websites last night and I'll check them again today, when I have more time.

When I travelled pretty much the same journey it was a train from York to Scarborough...then a local bus to Whitby (which had fantastic coastal views, especially when we popped into Robin Hoods Bay)...then another local bus from Whitby to Newcastle via Middlesbrough. You could change in Middlesbrough and go to Durham by bus or train.
Local bus service in England is very good and thorough. I bought a rover ticket that day which got me all the way from Whitby to Carlisle for less than 10 pounds on maybe 3 bus journeys, tops.
If you want local bus times (as opposed to National Express, which is rather limited) have a look at http://www.traveline.org.uk
I'd say you should contact Whitby's tourist info centre directly for their advice.
Having said all that, arriving by train in Durham is really the only way to travel. The view from the station of the cathedral and castle is magnificent. And when the train arrives in Newcastle, well..! It's probably the most awesome urban setting in the country! Happy travels!

Thank you for your help. I've checked all the links and found a solution. Also I emailed Whitby tourist information, maybe they know something even better. I can hardly wait to go, it seems to be such a beautiful area.

Travel Tips for Whitby
Whitby Harbour Views II
by sandysmith
Of course the harbour and the colourful boats in the late afternoon sun provide the perfect scenario for some favoured "Sandy reflection shots". More of these in the travelogue below but this one I think is my most memorable view of Whitby.
Runswick Bay

This picturesque little village is well worth a stop if you're in the area. Park your car at the top of the hill in the carpark and head down the walkway on the hillside. You'll see dozens of homes perched on the hill with little walkways leading to them. I'd hate to try and move in or out of them, you can't get a vehicle very close to them.
After wandering by the homes take a walk along the beach, admiring the scenery, looking for fossels in the rocks and just playing about in the sand with a bucket and spade. It's quite a lovely area.
When you're ready for a drink there is a small cafe overlooking the beach which offers various refreshments including ice cream.
Whitby's most famous Sea Food Restaurant
by jduck1979 about The Magpie Cafe
This is Whitby's most famous Fish & Chip shop (though they also do other foods), as featured numerous times on TV (BBC Local Heroes, Rick Stein, etc) + frequented by the occasional famous person (Adam Hart-Davies off BBC Local Heroes, TV Chefs such as Rick Stein, and I think at least 1 Blue Peter presenter's been there while they were filming in town a couple of years back).
It's located in what used to be a house belonging to the Scoresby family, who owned a whaling fleet + invented the Crow's Nest look-out on the masts of sailing ships.
It's gotten so popular neighbouring businesses started complaining about the crowds forming outside to get in, with the Police threatening to nail the waiting customers with £50 fines for blocking the pavement.
Sometime during the last couple of years they converted a neighbouring shop that used to sell kippers and things into a takeaway area. Not been there yet, as I hate queueing.
Church Stairs
by suvanki
Most visitors to Whitby will climb these 199 steps to St Marys Church, then carry on to the Abbey.
Early records show that the stairs were in place at least from 1370, and were made of wood.
In 1774, 103 tons of Sneaton stone, was bought to upgrade this route, with flat sections being constructed 'for the easement of bearers of coffins where they rested their burden on the long climb to the cliff top cemetery'
From the steps you get a good view over Whitby, and out to sea.
In the photo you can see the stairs behind the buildings.
Whitby Walks
by Britannia2
Heritage Harry has certainly found a niche in the tourist market with his Whitby walks. Of course lots of cities do walking tours but Harry is the first to do it in Whitby.
As you will see from the VT pages there is an awful lot of history in Whitby and Harry who describes himself as a story walker brings it to life. There are heritage town tours, ghost walks and In Search of Dracula walks.
Departure points are the Whale Bones at West Cliff or the Tourist Information Centre. Prices are £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for children.
