Rolling Eggs down the hill
Apparently there is an English tradition to roll hard boiled eggs down a hill. Nobody could explain to me what it was all about but as we had three Cadbury Cream Eggs left from Easter we rolled them down a hill....

Charlotte is a 1929 bulit Dennis bus that was found derelict some years ago and restored to its 1920s condition and today takes people on a vintage bus tour of Whitby.
The bus leaves Pier Road (near the band stand) when there are sufficient passengers to fill the bus. The tour of the town is £3 for adults , £2 for senior citizens and £1 for children.
St. Mary's Church is a highlight of Whitby, and it is well-worth the climb - all 199 steps - from the top just to enjoy the fantastic views over the town and over the North Sea. But the church itself is a remarkable survivor, with sections from just about every period of English architectural history all blending together to create a congruent whole.
Simon Jenkins, in "England's Thousand Best Churches," gives St. Mary's a rare four stars. "The short tower, dark stone walls and battlements stand defiant against the North Sea. Yet the friendly windows seem eager to warm the souls within. This is a big-hearted church. It has never been rebuilt or stripped and each generation has been greeted with another pew, gallery or extension until the place seems to burst at every seam. The result could be treated as part folly, part museum, part large parlour. The church contains on of the most complete sets of pre-Victorian furnishings in England."
The pews are the old old box kind - the only other place I've seen pews like this is in New England, in the US. The boxes are so "tall" that they completely prevent the congregants from seeing one another - no flirting at this church! Only the preacher, in his triple-decker pulpit above you, looks down like God upon you and sees into your heart and soul.
This road runs adjacent to The Church stairs, and leads to The Abbey House.
During the cholera epidemic of the 19th century, bodies were transported to Tate Hill Pier, then carried by men, or transported by cart to the cemetry, usually under cover of dark.
Again, views over Whitbys rooftops can be enjoyed on the way up or down.
The old lighthouse can be found on the West Pier and it was built in 1831. It is built of the yellow/brown stone found in this area and is 83 feet high with a lantern on the top. The light is visible for 10 miles but only displays a green light when a boat is expected.
Its demise as a real working lighthouse came in 1914 when the new West Pier light came in to use and this is still in use today.
Today the Port of Whitby operate the lighthouse in the summer months and the view from the top is very good but it is a long climb to the top.
Prices in 2010 are - adults £1.20 and children 70p.
