Travel Tips for Whitby
North East Weather
by kitkat1980
Even in the summer here, it can get very rainy and cold, you just cant predict, so its always worthwhile bringing a water proof with you just in case.
Whitby is also pretty much all cobbled streets, and has some steep roads, so its very advisable to wear sensible shoes (especially if you intend to walk the many steps up to the abbey) There are many potential areas to walk in the area, and for those that are intrested it may be worthwhile bringing some sensible gear.
Fish and Chips.
by A2002 about Mag Pie Cafe
The world knows it! "Best" fish and chips in the world. Expect a queue during meal hours. We went there at 2.30pm on Saturday, and there was a queue. Needless to say, Fish and Chips. There's portion of small, medium and large.
Walk up to the Abbey
by Rachael71
There are 199 steps up to the Abbey, but it's not a difficult walk and there are benches on the way. Even if you don't want to go into the church or the Abbey, it is worth the climb for the great views across the harbour.
Fishing villages often have houses painted pretty colours, apparently this was so the sailors could recognise their cottages from a distance as they sailed back into the harbour.
The Abbey
by bugalugs
The Abbey was originally founded by St. Hilda in 657. It is high on the cliff top overlooking Whitby town and harbour where you can see spectacular views.
The Abbey is owned and maintained by English Heritage.
Dracula Experience
by cheekymarieh
I have to admit that my visit here was not my choice! Two friends from Wroclaw in Poland loved Bram Stoker's novel 'Dracula' and had the museum as a 'must see' destination. As you wander around the various scary exhibits (well some people might be frightened by rubber bats, plastic statues, etc) there is always the risk that someone will jump out on you. I suppose there is a tenuous link to the story of Count Dracula as in the novel he did come ashore in Whitby.
If you visit the town regularly then I would say, visit once and you won't need to see it again. Otherwise if you have a restricted time in the town, I would say there are more interesting things to see (unless it is raining).
Open: Easter-Sept;10:00-20:00 Mon-Sun.
Winter: 12:00-18:00 Sat & Sun.
Costs about £2.50 for adults with reductions for children.
A word of warning - it probably isn't suitable for small children or people of a nervous disposition.
