away from the world
by chikidee
Whitby lies on the east coast of England. It's a very pretty fishermen town with a great long sandy beach and beautiful colourful changing rooms at the beach.
On top of the hill there is an old abby. It's a bit gost like with the old graveyard and the ruines of the abby and all you can hear is the wind blowing...
If you travel there by train I recommend you to check the time tables first. Otherwise you might end up spending 4 hours in Middlesbrough since there are only about 4 trains going to Witsand a day... But it was worth it!!
The Place To Go For Fish & Chips
by cheekymarieh about Royal Fisheries
The fish and chip shop has been on this spot since 1968. They have won two awards recently and I can understand why. There are only two places in the UK where I am tempted by fish and chips. This is one of them. The fish is very fresh (caught locally of course) and for me surpasses the fish and chips served in the Magpie Cafe. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Sun Open School Holidays 11.30 a.m. to Approx. 4 p.m.
This is one of the places you go for the food rather than the surroundings. There is also a takeaway service. I always go for the traditional cod, chips and mushy peas served with bread and butter and a pot of tea. This is one of the few places i know where they are happy to give you extra water for your tea. It is a joke in the family that I won't leave before I have drained the teapot dry. (This applies to my tea drinking habits wherever I am). The chips are excetional. They are crinkle cut and are not frozen.
100 year old swing bridge
by joanj
The Whitby Swing Bridge is over 100 years old, and joins the east and west sides of Whitby.
It was built in 1908 spanning 2 sections 75ft. Each section can be operated independently, swinging horizontally. It is manned 2 hrs either side of high water and vessels request an opening via VHF radio.
Whitby Museum
by Sjalen
I have no picture of the museum itself but it is hidden in the quarters behind the North Cliff here. This is the place to go to if you want to learn what Whitby is all about. Its significance as an abbey town, mining town, fishing town and whaling town. The last time I was there it had lots of boat models and a very interesting section on the cruel but income bringing whaling history. I found it quite interesting in the way I often do with small regional museums.
Fun Ways to look around
by kitkat1980
Have a look at the transport tips related to whitby as these can be fun things to do.
You can always take a tour of whitby by open top bus taking in all the main sites.
Take a trip to the neighbouring towns or into whitby by steam train.
You can also take out a pleasure boat which will take you round the shores, these operate from the main harbour, and have board advertising there times (these vary with the tides).
