Mayday in Poppleton Nr York

by Fiona&Tim

I was brought up in Poppleton and would love to go back this year for the Mayday celebrations. Does anyone know what date this will be on this year?

Thanks

Ayup!
I thought it would be easy to search the "Press" but found nothing there. Is it a big thing (I never knew about it when I lived in York)?

It used to be when I was little. Believe it or not I used to dance round the maypole . Thought it would be much more fun now that I can enjoy the hospitality of the local drinking establishments!

It's really a trip down memory lane for me. I hope that my childhood memories aren't being seen through rose tinted glasses, but it used to be fun.

Travel Tips for York

THE RIVER OUSE, YORKSHIRE

by LoriPori

The RIVER OUSE flows through the city of York and the towns of Selby and Goole, before joining with the River Trent at Trent Falls, near the village of Faxfleet, to form the Humber Estuary. The length of the Ouse is about 84 km (52 miles).
Heavy rainfall in the river's catchment area can bring severe flooding to nearby settlements. In recent years both York and Selby and villages in between, have been hit very badly.
In my accompanying pictures, you will notice that areas in front of the buildings are under water.

Go shopping

by cheekymarieh

Go shopping - the city centre has always been an excellent destination for those who love shopping. In recent years there are several out of town developments that have appeared. Take a trip out to McArthur Glen Designer outlet, and Monks Bar (just off the ring road) where you can find many high street names such as Principles, Boots, WH Smiths, Woolworths, and Laura Ashley.

It's England, It Rains!

Umbrella and waterproof coat for those rainy English days.
Comfy shoes for wandering for hours throughout the city. Camera with a wide angle lens to get good pic of Minster. Hard to get good pic as you can't get far enough away without wide lens.

One of the trips I took to...

by Michael_D

One of the trips I took to York was during a 6 week motorhome vacation around Europe. When we arrived in York there had just been a flooding of the River Ouse
and at least 2 houseboat pubs were under water. No attempt was made to bring them afloat. We parked the motorhome for free along the river and walked past the sub-pubs daily on our way into town.

Rievaulx Abbey

by margaretvn

Get out of the city and visit Rievaulx Abbey which is at Helmsley.
The ruins of this beautiful abbey lie in the steep woody valley of the river Rye. The abbey was founded in 1132 by the French Cistercian order from Clairvaux. It was their first major monastery in Britain and it lay almost completely surrounded by steep river banks which formed a natural barrier to the outside world. The main buildings were completed before 1200.
This painting is by one of my absolute favourite artists Turner. He always catches the mystery of a place and the wonderful colours of the light.
Rievaulx Abbey is under the care of English Heritage today.
Open all year but closed 24 -26 December.
Getting there:
it is just off the B1257 just 2 miles west of Helmsley
