There are of course all the usual High Street chains. Apart from that, Gillygate just outside Bootham Bar (city gate) is the sort of street where alternative shops come and go so something could have popped up there. Then there is the Blake's Head second hand place in Micklegate (with a book shop and veggie cafe across the street).

ST. WILFRID'S CATHOLIC CHURCH

Located at the intersection of 11 High Petergate and Duncombe Place, in the shadows of York Minster, the Church dedicated to St. Wilfrid has stood in York since medieval times. The Church is designed in Gothic Revival style. The Arch over the main door has the most detailed Victorian carving in the city. The present Church was completed in 1864 and it was considered to be one of the most perfectly finished Catholic Churches in England, rich in sculptures, paintings and stained glass.
St. Wilfrid's Bell Tower is 147 feet high. Ten bells were added to the tower in 1995.
St. Wilfrid's still stands as the "Mother Church of the city of York."

Mansion House

Official home of York's Lord Mayor - lived in by the actual holder of the office. Tours are available, but must be arranged in advance. The building dates from the 1730s and reflects the wealth of urban York in the pre-Industrial age. In St. Helen's Square.

Baile Hill

Baile Hill is a small hill near the southern section of the town walls. Once topped by one of William the Conqueror's wooden castles, and later used as the site prison in the 19th century, the Hill is nowadays bereft of any buildings.
Yorkshire Moors Railway

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway covers around some 28 kms of well kept steam railway which travels through some beautiful scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors. The Railway travels between Pickering in the south and Grosmont in the north. Grosmont is situated in the Esk valley on the north rim of the North York Moor, some 9.5kms from Whitby.
I'm not really a train enthusiast but the person I was travelling with, was... so we saw quite a few trains, not to mention travelling on a couple.
