Anyone in town?

by Gillybob

Any VT-ers in town on 20/21 January 2007? You might be interested in the York Winter Warmer meeting. The meeting is listed in the VT meetings section - sign-up at

The more the merrier - come and freeze with us and have a great time visiting this walled city.

The timing is sadly wrong for us - just after a long Christmas break and before the February winter break in Swedish schools. Shame as we are a York couple and it would be nice to go back more frequently than we do.

Travel Tips for York

Take a ghost trail...

by cheapskate

That's us all enchanted by the ghost story teller... Juz looking at him tells you everything.. it's a pretty long activity.. AT NIGHT.. if you're like me.. this would probably give you the goosebumps too... Towards the end of the tour.. some peacock called out and all of us started screaming and ran all the way back the the hotel... hehe

Statue - Emperor Constantine

by yooperprof

Constantine was the Roman Emperor responsible for the legalization of Christianity within the Roman Empire. His relatively long reign (306-337) restored stability to the Empire, and he is also remembered as the founder of the city of Constantinople (later Istanbul). He was actually here in York - then Roman Ebor - at the time of the death of the previous Emperor, and so he was crowned on the banks of the Ouse.

This statue is quite new, and may inadvertently give the impression that he was crowned _inside) the Minister, which of course was not constructed until the 14th century.

Before our study group left...

by eleanorbueza

Before our study group left Vancouver for England, everyone was looking forward to trying some famous Yorkshire Pudding. For those who are familiar with Jello vanilla or chocolate puddings, you will be disappointed when Yorkshire Pudding is served on your plate at a traditional restaurant. Yorkshire Pudding, to me, looked like a greasy, shriveled up piece of circular bread. I was overcome with disbelief when my Cambridge professor dipped it in chunky gravy sauce. Everyone else seemed to enjoy it - maybe I am the abnormal one ...

Hidden history.

by leics

It's easy to miss Holy Trinity church, off Goodramgate. Its tiny, peaceful churchyard is hidden behind Lady Row (some of the oldest houses in England) and is reached by a short alleyway. The church dates from the 1400's, although there was a church on the site as early as 1082. The interior is exactly as it was in the 1700's, complete with box pews black with age. Very evocative, and very peaceful.

Knaresborough

by Sjalen

Knaresborough is a lovely town on the banks of the river Nidd and with a huge bridge across it. You can fall for the tourist trap of 'Mother Shipton's petrifiying well' but you can also just wander around a lovely small town where people greet you in the streets, look at the castle ruins (the castle is where Thomas a Beckett's murderers fled to after the deed in Canterbury) and have a relaxing day out, perhaps renting a boat on the river. Bus or train from York station towards Harrogate.
