More about Griffon Forest Hideaways
Will be back shortly!!!!
This was our second stay at Griffon Forest and when we walked through the door it was just as breath-taking as the first time. The weather was appauling but it didn't spoil our time there. We sat out under the rain and stars in the hot tub.
We visited the recently built Tykes Restaurant at Sandburn Hall which was particularly sophisticated. The food was lovely and it was great being able to watch it being cooked. We would recommend visiting the Tanglewood as it is reasonably priced with decent pub food and drink.
We would recommend carrying a map of York whilst shopping in the town as it is quite difficult to find your way around the smaller streets.
Asda and Sainsburys are nearby which is useful for the essentials. Make sure you bring some nuts and bird seed as it is wonderful to watch the wildlife whilst sitting only a few feet away. Watch out if you open the doors and windows as the birds sometimes have a habit of flying in and not being able to find their way back out. If you're quiet enough, the squirrels will come into the doorway for food.
We'd like to mention how helpful and polite the staff at Griffon Forest are. They are there whenever you need them and will hapily go out of their way to assist you.
We really enjoyed our stay at Griffon Forest and would love to go back again soon!
Absolutely Amazing ! Highly Recommended!!
I can't say enough how amazing this place is....If you're looking for total peace and quiet and 'together' time - This place is a must!
Everything about the lodges is romantic, the Champagne, Chocolates and Flowers on arrival.....such a lovely touch
I also strongly suggest being in the hot tub at night time, watching the stars sipping some wine or Champagne...We took a few candles and dotted them around the hot tub (be careful not to spill wax though) .... We put on some CD's, rolled the TV as far to the window as possible and listened to music...it was brilliant.
And as for the jacuzzi, it is also out of this world...!
A few tips for people going - I would take your own breakfast stuff and maybe things for dinner too....We didn't take food for dinner and ate at the Tykes Restaurant which was lovely but a little bit pricey...There is also a little village pub that does food in Flaxton which we didn't sample.
Also, take a lot of alcohol if you drink alot, washing up liquid and little bits like that....
I can't wait to go back. Next time I do, I want it to be snowing...with me in the hot tub.....pure bliss.....
Took my husband for his 40th birthday as a surprize he was blown away especially with the hot tub. It was lovely sitting under the stars sipping champagne nice and warm in the hot tub whilst it was freezing outside. We enjoyed it so much that we have booked again for next year same time and really can not wait. If you are looking for total relaxation and a get away from it all place then this is for you. It is within reach of York town centre and Whitby and Scarbrough should you wish to venture further afield. We loved the Tykes restaurant too they did some lovely meals and plenty of it too reasonable prices. Just remember to take a torch to get back to the lodges from the restaurant as it is very dark.
OK if You Want to Totally Get Away
My daughter booked this break as a suprise for our honeymoon on the recomendation of our local travel agent.
The cabin was clean and had every gadget imaginable but the bed was uncomfortable and the open plan was not good if one of you wanted a lie in.
The cabins were a mile into the forest so it was very isolated which is ok if you want to just stay in your cabin but it was a nightmare going anywhere as it was so dark, probably not so bad in the summer.
York is a nice place to visit but I would not use Griffon Forest as a base to do so
a forest haven in yorkshire
We booked a long weekend friday to monday at griffon forest. For this time of year it was great as the heating was available all the time, hot water all the time, great walks on our doorstep and a fantastic hot tub on the veranda to enjoy and chill out at night time.
York was only a short distance away which was great to enjoy in the mornings and then great to go back to our lodge in the afternoon to enjoy walking and eating at the Tykes Restaurant - excellent food just a short walk away.
We took 2 small children - 2 and 3. It was very toddler friendly, the child could roam around the lodge safely and also walk around the forest safely.
Great break would love to go back
hot tub heaven
third visit, superb yet again, hot tub & four poster a luxury.the tranquility & wildlife are so relaxing.nice pubs on main road good food at the four alls inn.try a break at the forest, you will wish you had done it years ago!!
Just had the most relaxing weekend away ever! Everything was perfect. Lodges are clean with everything you could possibly need. We stayed in a Poachers Lodge and the bedroom Jaccuzzi was great and as for the hot tub, well im seriously thinking about getting into debt because I dont think I can live without one now!!!
A little bit of what you need
What a wonderful treat. Very relaxing, good walks, woodland scenery, privacy. Cabin was excellent, brand new and had every amenity required and more.... Didnt really want to leave the cabin to explore area. Hot Tub fantastic and extremely relaxing and fun.
We did eat at a local pub, Four Alls, large tired pub, with large tired portions of food. Not really what we wanted but ok, we then dined over the following two nights at the Tykes Restaurant next door to the log cabins. Very good quality food and nice surroundings. Definitely recommend.
Would definitely recommend and will be returning. Good value for money.
A great relaxing beautiful setting
Arrived back from a wonderful and relaxing break. Arrived to welcoming reception, we were accomodated in one of the new poachers lodges. As we parked John who looks after the maintenance came to show us around and how to operate everything. This lodge was superb, everything you needed and more. Flat screen TV, Sky, Freeview, DVD/CD player, well equiped kitchen, laundry room with washer dryer, vacum cleaner, iron. hairdryer, beautiful and very comfortable four poster bed, 6 foot jacuzzi bath, champagne, fresh flowers and chocolates. A welcome tray even down to milk and chocolate digestives. Outside was a very large deck with your own hot tub. Its the second time we have holidayed there and have already booked to go again in June cant wait. We also had snow which made it magical.
a lovely relaxing break
Have just returned from a 4 night family break and wanted to add my review, as I've found the other reviews really useful.
I've 'done' Center Parcs before, but have to say I prefer these lodges and the fact that it is much more peaceful - also you park your car at the lodge, so no long walks to the car park!
The hot tub was a definate bonus - we looked forward to relaxing with a glass of cava each day after our sightseeing.
Though the lodges are 8 miles from York, don't let that put you off. We used the excellent park and ride system a couple of times - its on the main road into York at Monks Cross shopping centre, and saves all the hassle of city centre parking. The buses are frequent, £2 return.
There is an excellent information booklet in the lodge, with lots of tips for good places to eat. We combined their advice with our Good Pub Guide, and went to the Stone Trough at Kirkham where we had a really good meal. The local Blacksmiths Pub in the village was ok - but not much atmosphere - we were the only ones in for the first half hour!
What I also liked was that Reception had sample menus of many of the pubs and also lots of take away menus, so that you could ring and order in advance - Jinnah's indiian restaurant/take away is just a couple of miles down the road and was excellent.
Finally, they are opening an on site shop soon, which will be a big bonus.
We will definately be returning!
