Do not eat here. I found metal in my food.

We went to the pub new years gay. I ordered the fish and chips and found a lump of metal in the batter which looked like the back of an ear ring. I nearly broke my tooth chewing on it and I am just glad I didn't swallow it. The staff apologised and gave me a replacement meal but I think it’s unforgivable to find contaminants in food particularly metal. I've worked in the restaurant trade and I found the attitude of the manager less than supportive and only mildly apologetic. He only offered my food for free not the rest of the group who picked at their meals for fear of what they would find. After the metal incident I did not have much faith in my meal nor did my fellow diners. The meal was ruined and a complete waste of money. I would never go back there again. It’s a real shame as it’s a beautiful pub with plenty of character. If there is metal in the fish batter what else could be in the food?

Unique Quality: DO NOT EAT HERE!

Bed and breakfast near the Minster

Living locally I have no need to stay in York but here is a photo of a hotel that gets good write ups in the local press. I have based my ratings on what I have read.

BIRTHPLACE OF GUY FAWKES

The Guy Fawkes Hotel is a small Georgian building just across a narrow lane from the St. Michael-Le-Belfrey. This church is just opposite the main doors (not used as an entrance now) of York Minster. They offer a variety of rooms and you can even rent the cottage Guy Fawkes was born in!

They have the following facilities:
* Guido's Lounge for a cold beer
* Guido's Restaurant for small parties
* Bed & Breakfast accommodation

From their website: Tariff 2007
Twin / Double £90
Four Poster - views over York Minster £110
Large Four Poster - views over York Minster or in Guy Fawkes Cottage. £120
Family Room £120

Prices are for two people per night inclusive of Breakfast and VAT

Unique Quality: Its historical secret is an ancient cottage in a small courtyard behind the hotel – the birthplace of Guy Fawkes. Guy (also known as Guido) was born here, baptised at the church next door and plotted to blow up Parliament and the King in the Gunpowder Plot. He was caught, tortured and executed. And so the legend of Bonfire Night began. Even if you do not stay in the hotel, pop in for a peak!

* Please not Guy Fawkes was called Guido because he served in the Spanish Army.

The Best Location in York

This is a very pricey (by my standards) hotel, located directly across the street from Yorkminster. If location is everything, then this is the place to be. You won't find anyplace that is closer to everything in York.

Unique Quality: Behind the hotel is a 16th century cottage, reputedly the birthplace of Guy Fawkes. For those who may not remember, he is one of York's most famous (or infamous) sons. In the early 17th century, he attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. His plot was foiled, and he was captured. Under torture, he was forced to reveal the names of his co-conspirators, who were later rounded up. Then he was executed in the same horrible manner as William Wallace (for those who saw the movie Braveheart). And this is where he came from.

The hotel has a fine pub and restaurant, right where you want to be in York.

A charming place

by TripAdvisor Member juandarien

The Guy Fawkes is a small hotel, 12 rooms, in a very old house. It is located across the street from the York Minster and is in a great location, best in York. The managers, Brian and Shirley are very nice and do whatever it takes to be helpful. We stayed for 5 nights in the Courtyard room , which was very clean, spacious and had a very large modern bathroom. This room was a bit noisy at times from people upstairs but not a major problem. The breakfast was very good, wide choices. The food at the hotel for dinner was the best we found in York. I would be happy spending two weeks there. You can walk all over York from the hotel.

Fantastic Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Talbotbird

I stayed in this hotel with my now husband for a long weekend to York last October. What a truly lovely hotel. The service was second to none and the rooms were lovely and interesting - we were in the guy fawkes suite across the courtyard in the back. The room had a huge four poster bed and a bathroom to die for, with a freestanding bath and separate walk in shower! The breakfast was freshly made and tasty, and one night we had dinner in the hotel which was very enjoyable.
This hotel by far has one of the best positions in York, and we will definitely be visiting again.

Just what we'd hoped for!

by TripAdvisor Member silvercat

I am particularly paranoyed when booking things online, especially when I wasn't familier with 'York' either.
The whole weekend was booked because of my lovely mother-in-law who is to turn 70 shortly. My husband and I pretended we were just booking it for her and her husband and we wanted to turn up as a surprise.
We had all ages to bare in mind as I have a one year old and a four year old.
We booked the 'Champagne' deal for my 'Mother-in-Law' which was in the 'Guy Fawkes' cottage and as a treat we booked ourselves a four poster room and because the family room had gone, they put a travel cot and a foldaway bed in there, both which fitted comfortably.
The surprise worked a treat 'Brian and Shirley' covered for as beautifully.
The rooms were wonderful, big, clean and nicely decorated, the bathrooms were generous sizes with roll top baths and seperate showers.
The place doesn't paticularly cater for small children inside the hotel, but I would advise you have room 12 (which we were in) because double doors open on to a secluded court yard with table and chairs allowing you to have a quiet drink why your children sleep under you watchful eye.
We all had a lovely week end, just what you would expect from a historic town.

What a Great Place to Stay!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

Have returned today from a 2 night stay at this hotel and what can we say but excellent all round!

Brian and Shirley who run the hotel greeted us on our arrival and showed us to our room. The room surpassed our expectations. There was a greeting leaflet together with complimentary tea and coffee. The room was spotlessly clean with plenty of space.

Breakfast was served between 8am and 10am and as soon as you came down the stairs, they showed you to a table and served you right away. There was something to cater for every taste including fresh juice, fresh fruit, cereal, croissants with the option of a full english breakfast and toast with tea or coffee. If you had any special requirements, they were more than happy to cater for this for you. The breakfasts were all freshly cooked to order. The couple running the hotel were great when it came to going in and out of the hotel at times to suit you. You were free to come and go as you pleased with no problems.

We regularly sat in the bar/dining area in the hotel having a drink and found all the staff very friendly and easy to talk to and service was always very speedy and efficient.

All round this hotel is in a great location, right opposite the Minster, right near The Shambles and shops.

If you are looking for a great place to stay that is in a good location, with great dining facilities, great hospitality and all places of interest on your doorstep, then this is the hotel to go to.

When we have a chance to return to York, we will have no hesitation in returning to this hotel again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to stay.

Wow What A Location

by TripAdvisor Member lovetotravel1704

We stayed in the King James Room over the weekend of 16 - 18 June 2006. We were welcomed on arrival and the staff were friendly throughout our stay. The location is fantastic being opposite the York Minster. We were fortunate enough to book a room overlooking the Minster. We drove to the hotel and pre-booked a garage from them which was a five minute walk from the hotel and we appriciated the convenience as once in York the hotel is so central one does not need a car. Our room was nicely furnished and very comfortable with a lovely carved four poster bed and sofa. The ensuite shower room was quite compact but had everything one needed. The room which was located on the first floor had three large windows which had a gorgous view of the York Minster and St Michael le Belfry. We enjoyed just sitting there looking out of the window. There was some street noise as previous postings have mentioned but we felt that the location, view and hotel itself easily outweighed this. Breakfast was served in the restaurant downstairs with a good choice from the buffet and a cooked breakfast made to order. We would have no hesitation in going back again or recommending to others.

Europe in Novemebr

by ilusha

Can anyone suggest a good place to visit, in Europe, during the first week of November. Would be best if the place has a history and a nightlife

Re: Europe in Novemebr

by MarcG

Have you thought about Spain...The weather especially in the south can be quite nice actually in November and the spaniards are big party animals!!! As for historic places the choices are so many ...!!

Re: Re: Europe in Novemebr

by Sjalen

The first week of November means that you can experience Guy Fawkes day in England which is certainly historical. Try a historic city like Oxford or similar (which also has nightlife since it is a student city). York is also historical but less likely to celebrate everywhere since Guy Fawkes was BORN there...London is also good - Time Out lists parks where you can see the bonfires. Mix this with visits to cosy pubs...
Alternatively, go somewhere completely different where it is WARM in November...

Re: Europe in Novemebr

Hi Ilya,
My standard reply, of course, is the Netherlands - Amsterdam (and Rotterdam and Eindhoven and Maastricht too!!!) The weather may not be the best in November, but I see you come from NY, which is where I moved here from, and November is one of the least expensive times to get here. History and night live define the Netherlands. In November the tourist crowds have lessened, but the night life goes on!
Wherever you go, I hope you have a lovely time!
Regards,
Robin Linda

If good weather isn't an issue then Dublin, Berlin or Amsterdam.

If you want good weather Rome or Barcelona.

Have a good time wherever you decide,

Re: Europe in Novemebr

Most mayor european cities will qualify! Amsterdam is surely much fun but the weather can be a bit unpredictable. Same goes for London and Paris. Actually i think in November the only places you'll have a fairly good change of nice weather will be in the south of Spain, Portugal, Italy or Greece. Even Barcelona can be tricky with weather forecasts. But is definitely worth a visit too! Though choice!
