Senior Citizens Visit to York
by jcourtnellsmith
Old married couple spending three days this month in York. Years since we were there. Do the local buses have such a thing as day ticket tariffs because our Scottish free passes don't work in England ? Where are the most interesting places that local buses journey to ? Thanks all

You can get day tickets, yes. Ticket info here:

Routes, timetables etc:

Interesting places reasonably nearby include Scarborough, Whitby, Pickering, Knaresbrough. Eden Camp WW2 museum at Malton is excellent:

Add Harrogate to Leics list.If the weather is not too good York has the Castle museum , Minster, and Railway museum, also if you like a drink loads of city centre pubs and WM clubs.

I am a senior as well (70) and over my last two trips to York I took the Coastliner bus from the rail station to Whitby and then to Scarborough and back to York. Another time I took the bus to Eden Camp, a former WWII POW camp. I have train trips as well from York to Leeds, Sheldon and along the coast.

If you are there before October 25th you can use the Moorsbus service too. This is a service that goes to some well known and some not so well known destinations.
Lots of tips on York on my VT pages and many others too.
Have a look at -http://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/uploads/publication/9684.pdf
Also not many people know Beverley but if you like York you will like Beverley. Again lots of information here on VT.

If your hotel/guest house is a distance from the sites, a First Bus day ticket is £3.70, just ask the driver, use all day unlimited in First York Bus area.
Travel Tips for York
Wall Plaques
by barryg23
Many of the most important churches, buildings and streets in York have wall plaques, which give a brief overview of the particular site. I think this is a fantastic idea - it's not something I've seen anywhere else in Britain but it would be great if more places adopted a similar scheme.
STREET ENTERTAINERS
by LoriPori
In the Square, in front of the entrance to the Newgate Market, there was a wonderful sound of music in the air. A colourful group of South American Indians were playing their flutes and wind instruments, to the delight of the crowd. I love this kind of music - it's so peaceful and relaxing.
A video, courtesy of Hansi (Waalewiener), highlights the music and performance witnessed in the Newgate Market Square. Pictures are great, but video of the live music is even better.
See York Minster
by steventilly
See York Minster, without a doubt one of the finest cathedrals ever built. Be sure to walk all the way around it, both outside and in, and marvel at the sheer size and splendour of the building. Probably my meeting with my VT friends Deanna, NorK and Aubrey - see the travelogue.
Walmgate to Walmgate Bar
by JohnHarper
This is a continuation from my introduction page to York that described some of the interesting buildings around Merchantgate. Continuing to Walmgate and turning right you will pass the entrance to the Red Lion (not compulsory, you can drop in for a drink if you like). As you pass down the street you will soon see the Five Lions pub with five upstairs windows, one for each lion. It also has an interesting curved entrance to the archway. By the way, if you thought you were heading towards the town centre you probably have your map upside down! Continuing along Walmgate you pass St Denys church, and many interesting old buildings, the Evening Press offices and works and the Spreadeagle pub. Just as Walmgate bar comes into view you should see the Elizabethan timbered Bowes Morrell house.
Continue on to Walmgate bar with it's Barbican and then take the left hand set of stairs up on to the wall for the next stage towards the Red Tower.
York Model Railway
by tvor
This looks like quite a different exhibit. If you are a model railway fan or builder, this is definitely a must see for you. Find it beside the York rail station.
