If you want to travel by train to York you can get a train from Manchester Airport. If the train is Hull bound change at Leeds but Newcastle, Scarborough and Middlesborough trains will all go directly to York in about 90 minutes. Go to www.arrivatrainsnorthern.co.uk for prices and times.

Don't speed through Manchester without having a look. It would give you an excellent contrast seeing both cities, one quaint and traditional and the other with almost as much heritage but plenty more verve and vitality!

hi if your driving then you can get directions from here
http://route1.rac.co.uk/routeplanner
it only takes about 90 mins as long as your flight doesnt come in at rush hour
the best option is the train direct from manchester airport and they run often enough to get a direct one
takes about the same length of time as it makes a few stops along the way

Travel Tips for York

Loo at a map. York has the usual assortment of motorways and a ring road. But the City Centre is best seen on foot combined with a good bus system.

Of course my fav mode would be bicycle. 20% of the locals ride bikes to work as oppsed to 3% rdership nationally. Its a bike-freindly city for sure.

Take A Riverside Walk

by steventilly

Take a riverside walk. At some parts of the river you can only walk on one side or the other, and at other bits you can walk on either side. The riverside walk runs right down out of the city towards Selby, passing Rowntree Park and the new Milennium Bridge on the way.
This view is looking towards Skeldergate Bridge as we walked from Rowntree Park

Taking pics of the minster at dusk

by sabsi

Bring a tripod. I thought my camera was ok to take evening shots without one and on the display the pics looked great. So I took loads of pictures - and they were all more or less blurred.

The skies and the minster would have looked perfect though so if you have a tripod this is the place for you at dusk!

Aysgarth Falls. In the summer the falls are relative small but after heavy rains they must be really awesome.
Not far from Aysgarth Falls there is an abbey which served as the background in an episode of James Herriot. Worth visiting.

Beverley. It is a small market town approx 35 mile between York and Hull. It has a large Minster which could rival York but is sadly overlooked by most tourists. The town is nice for an hour or two, Some nice pubs with good food and beer and also has a market on a Saturday.
Ideal for going to Hull to catch the ferry to the continent.
