Trains from York to Edinburgh

by qrpw

Hi everybody, I'm going to York and Edinburgh for a holiday next month.

Our hotel in Edinburgh is close to Edinburgh Park Station, not the main Edinburgh Train Station. Is there an option to take a train from York to Edinburgh Park, and does it cost more or less?

Re: Trains from York to Edinburgh

www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you train times, details and fares for all UK trains.

If you select 'Edinburgh Park' from the drop-down kmenu you will see yopur options.

Basically, if you go from Edinburgh Park the journey is a bit longer, and has one change...at Edinburgh (Waverley). Whilst the journey from Edinburgh Park to Edinburgh Waverley only takes around 16 minutes, it adds around 30 minutes to the journey as there is a short time to wait between trains.

Fare is more or less the same. From 38 GBP single advance fare (purchase up to 6pm the night before at either station), from 76.20GBP advance return fare. It's well worth buying your ticket at either station a day or so before you intend to visit York, to take advantage of the cheaper fare (but be aware that they are restricted to certain trains.

Assume that the rates and timings are the same for the other way round, as OP wants to go from YORK to Edinburgh Park

Yes, indeed.....am still half-asleep from my holiday. :-(

The nationalrail website will give times, details and fares for either journey. And fares, times, changes etc will be the same in either direction.

Travel Tips for York

Overnight parking

by Britannia2

We occasionally get asked in the travel forums about overnight parking. It is possible to park overnight in Foss Islands Road and Grimson Bar park and ride site.
Mini bus and mobile home parking is only recommended at these 24 hour sites. 2009 charges are up to 2 hours £3.30, 2 to 5 hours £5.00 , 18.00 to 24.00 £2.00 and all day £8.00. There is no charge 24.00 to 08.00.
These are pay and display car parks where you buy a parking ticket from a machine so make sure you have change.

My favourite shop is called Lush. They sell wonderful soaps and bath-time goodies, body lotions etc. It might not sound very exciting but you can smell the place from a hundred metres away! It’s not expensive, but easy to come out having spent £30! Treat yourself! The chain has an internet site www.lush.co.uk and can supply to most of Europe.

take a walk around the walls. At various points on a wall walk you will come to a gate. These usually consist of defensive towers either side of an arched gateway. The gates are called Bars (and streets are called Gates, got that?) So this picture is of Mickelgate Bar.

A Cyclists Paradise

by Getcarlos

York has recently been designated a cycle city and has recently had its already great cycle network improved further. There are so many traffic free paths through the city and out into the North Yorkshire countryside and the Vale of York, it is an easier and quicker way of getting round than bus or car in the congested city centre!

Many places to park on Parliament Street and the Station, but dont forget your lock!!!

Judges Lodgings

Just breezed in for a nosy, we were just walking past the place and popped in for a look. It has a lovely Georgian frontage with very cosy sitting rooms with fireplaces that I'm sure will roar in the winter, and a very impressive central stair case.
