More about Ibis York Centre

I'll be back to see it finished

by TripAdvisor Member WEBBLY

I was dreading my stay in the Ibis York as I had been reading the reviews but all in all, my stay was a pleasent one. The room was pleasent although maybe a little cold, the breakfast was lovely, hot and varied and the staff on duty were wonderful. All staff seem to be working very hard, like umplum, I also witnessed Rachel zooming about the hotel, although slightly flustered, always smiling and chatting. I was told about all the plans for the hotel and can't wait to return next year to se the final results. I love York and the Ibis is in a great location. The parking however is a complete joke, I shall think twice before squeezing my motor in there again.

Not too shocking if not the Ritz

by TripAdvisor Member CAZGAZ

We were a party of 4 adults and 6 children and stayed for one night which we were anxious about having seen the reviews. However we were allowed into the rooms from 12 noon which was great as we had arrived by train, and they were big family rooms with 2 x doubles and 1 x single. They are old fashioned but warm and clean and there is carparking just behind the hotel for guests which is free. The breakfast next morning was good and pleniful and we found the staff helpful although a bit elusive. All in all good value and fine basic accommodation like a travel lodge but a little more dated.

Fit for purpose

by TripAdvisor Member BagpussLondon

My partner and I stayed at the Ibis for one night on 22nd May as we were looking for somewhere to lay our heads to break up our journey to Edinburgh. Most of the other reviews mention the ongoing refurbishment and it is in evidence in the public areas. However, i have no idea whether we stayed in a newly refurbed room although it was clean throughout. As the previous review was some time ago I thought it would be best to list the good and bad points:

Good points
- Free parking which they are happy to let you use even after you've checked out (a lot of other hotels charge or send you to a local NCP)
- Very close to York town centre
- Bright, clean bathroom with a good shower
- Friendly staff
- Curtains that completely block out the morning light

Bad points
- Scaffolding on the front of the building obscures the Ibis sign so we initially drove past it
- Houses (i think) are being built on the plot next to the hotel and the builders start at 8am
- The room was slightly on the small side such that you wouldn't want to spend any more than a night
- No soap except for the shower gel dispenser in the shower
- The public areas in the hotel smell like a million cigarettes have recently been smoked there
- Having to pay for breakfast (we didn't so i have no idea of the quality of food)

Mixed reports
- The mattress: apparently it is made of foam and is very firm. it is divided into sections each of which has a groove separating it from the next. Initially we thought it might have been a Tempur mattress but i don't think it is. We enquired about it with the Receptionist who told us that they had had very mixed reports about the quality of sleep of its guests. My partner and i both had a fantastic sleep so we had no complaints!

The key thing to remember is that the Ibis is a value chain and unfortunately in big or historic cities, space is usually at a premium which you have to pay for. In terms of staying one night, the Ibis was fit for purpose as it was 5 minutes from the city centre and was comfortable if not a little bijou. However, if you are staying any longer than a night then you might want to look at one of the bigger chains such as the Radisson or the Hilton (although neither get good reviews on this site).

Decent price, close to town, beware refurbishing

by TripAdvisor Member beneatharthursseat

This hotel is very close to the city center, and well within walking distance of everything you'll want to see. The front desk staff was polite and helpful. The third floor of the hotel is currently being remodeled, which means that the thermostat doesn't work - meaning little to no air circulation even when the windows are open. A request for a fan was denied because the fan was already in use by some other poor guest who had to deal with the stifling heat.

Large notices are posted in the fanless bathrooms asking that you not allow steam to escape because it will set off the fire alarm and the building will need to be evacuated. Thankfully no one in the building did this while I was there!

Terrible hotel Ibis in York

by TripAdvisor Member landvanhop

We think that even after the refurbishment you should stay away from this hotel in York. The rooms are steamy hot even with windows wide open. Room (3rd floor) was dirty, too small and extremely noisy. Airco doesn't work and will probably not work after the refurbishment. The reception told us that no hotel in York has airco! At the time that we stay there it was rather cool weather, so you must imagine how it must be on a warm summerday! Overall in the building you smell and see dust from painting and gives a quite unhealthy feeling. At first the reception ignored our complaints but after support of other guest in the same reception lounge they take notice and offering a 10% discount. For business and private we have already stayed in lots of all types hotels. But this last stay was such a horrible experience for us that we decide to afoid Ibis hotels in future.

Get what you pay for

by TripAdvisor Member MargiLiverpool

Hotel not bad, as I say above - you get what you pay for! Stayed here for one night and it is still being refurbished. Room basic although it could have been a little cleaner. Overall, it was fine because we did not spend much time in the hotel due to being out all day and night walking around lovely York. Car park is a bonus because it's free, although it is a tight squeeze and found that someone blocked us in!

at £50 odd quid cant complain!

Run down and a bit peculiar

by TripAdvisor Member rssa

There's a lot of bare plaster with wires hanging from ceilings, and someone has decorated the whole building with WordArt paper signs. Work (noisy machines) starts at 9am. The staff are well-meaning but unimpressive. Rooms are dirty. No discount or notification on booking. Have stayed in other Ibis hotels and come to expect a minimal but very decent standard. Definitely not delivered here.

Stay away from this hotel!

by TripAdvisor Member DisneyBonkers

This hotel was terrible - I would not recommend this to anyone.

I stayed here for two nights in December 2006 with my family and boyfriend. We arrived late at night, by car, and attempted to get into the hotel car park. There were spaces available but the parking area is so small it was impossible to get into, and the car almost got wedged in when my dad attempted to get into one of the empty spaces. The only thing that the hotel reception could suggest was that we could park the car in a nearby multi storey car park overnight, which of course cost a lot.

The reception area was somewhat welcoming, however when we got to our rooms it was a different story. My mum, dad and brother were in a triple room and my boyfriend and I in a double (in other words two singles) next door. Both rooms were dull and in great need of updating, the hotel was being renovated at the time of our stay but in my opinion our rooms should never have been let out until they had been re-done.
The room was dusty and the floor needed a good hoover, it was a long room and a small size and the cupboard was so close to the beds that the doors did not open fully. The bathroom was a heath hazard. Musty smelling with mildew down the walls, the ceiling and wall tiles were coming apart and some were missing, the floor was the same. The bath was coming apart - so much so that there was a large bit of it sticking up with a jagged edge which could have cut one of us if we had not been careful. On complaining to reception we were told, by a particularly rude and unhelpful woman, that the hotel was full and was being refurbished.

Our only saving grace was that we were only in the hotel at night. The location was ok, about a 10 / 15 minute walk from the centre of York so perhaps someone with walking difficulties would be better nearer the centre of the city.

York is a wonderful place, full of history and charm with the old cobbled streets. If you can visit at Christmas time - carol singers, roasting chesnuts and we even found a winter festival with ice sculptures and a snow machine! Also go to "Betty's" tea room if you can - it is expensive but well worth it!

I didn't let the hotel spoil my trip to York, but it would have made all the difference to come home to a hotel that has all the charm that the city does.

Don't worry - it's fine!

by TripAdvisor Member nogginthenog

Hotel is being renovated at the moment - the reception area is totally gutted, but this didn't affect our stay.
As previous people have said the car park is EXTREMELY tight, we noticed a massive 4WD trying to get into a tiny space - didn't fancy his chances of getting out!
Our room was very modern, but carpet needed a vacuum. Overall though a very good room.
Breakfast was fine - good selection of typical fried fayre
The Ibis was absolutely fine - just don't expect the Ritz.
