Getting to Castle Howard

by amyLbrown2002

I will be in York mid-march, and would love to take a trip out to Castle Howard. However, I do not have a car. I know that there is a coach liner company that stops off there, but I have looked on their website and they only seem to run the service in Summer.

Any ideas on how I might be able to make the trip out?

The nearest railway station is at Malton, which is a distance of 6 miles away from Castle Howard. Trains arrive frequently from the direction of Scarborough and York, and taxis are available at the station. Approximate cost is £10.00 one way, but should be confirmed with your taxi driver.

Yes, when the buses don't make the detour via Castle Howard in winter, a taxi from Malton should be your best bet. Worth the splash out though, and I'm not just saying that because my former flatmate's granddad was their gardener - it IS fantastic. Don't miss the fountain!

Travel Tips for York

City Walls

by HORSCHECK

Take a stroll on the almost complete city walls around the historic old town of York. The stroll offers many nice views of the old part of the city including the famous Minster. On the 2 1/2 miles long walk you come across the gates of the city walls, which are called Bars (Monk-, Bootham-, Micklegate- and Walmgate Bar).

by steventilly

take a look at Clifford's Tower (in Tower Street).

Set atop a grassy mound, this circular tower has a grim past. In 1190 the York Jewish community sought protection in the tower from a mob of anti-semitists. Rather than perish at the hands of the mob, the Jews took their own lives.

Hog roasts.

by leics

In the distant past, meat was roasted by turning it on a spit over an open fire. That doesn't happen now, obviously, but the idea of hot roasted meat placed between two pieces of bread, with added sauces, is still popular. Called 'hog roasts', these shops (or mobile catetring vans) usually provide a choice of hot pork, beef or poultry (sometimes lamb too) with various added extras.
One of the best in York is Dave's on Goodramgate......the portions are huge and extremely tasty.

Castle Howard - Private Home...Still

by tpal

Castle Howard is truly remarkable.

I should probably stop right there (I won't, of course) because further description runs the risk of rampant over use of superlatives. The 18th century house is incredible on several levels not the least of which is the fact that it is still a private residence. The Honorable Simon Howard and his family, in fact, do live there although not necessarily throughout the entire facility.

A description of the 10,000 acre estate is futile here and I would suggest you check out their website below. It would certainly be possible to spend a day viewing the castle exhibits, including one describing the filming of Brideshead Revisited for PBS, and wandering the grounds and gardens. If you're anything like me, you'll take a briefer more non-directive approach and just try to soak it all in.

THWAITE

by keeweechic

Thwaite is a little cluster of stone houses and farms in the Dales which seem to all huddle together as if in protection (probably against the winter here). The village was founded Norsemen and Thwaite means ' a clearing in woodland'.

There are not so many trees now. The trees were felled to create farmland and never given the opportunity to regenerate.
