York day trips

by lou31

Hello to all
I am still trying to organise this UK itinery and now I have decided to go to York. My problem is that I will be staying for 2 nights and would like to do a day tour to the Yorkshire Moors etc. Been searching the net for info but no luck.

Would anyone know if there are such things as day trips to the York countryside from York itself or of any good websites where I could get some information.

Thanks to all so far......hopefully I will have all plans finalised this week
Cheers and Happy New Year!.......Louise

No problems Lou!

If possible, avoid rip-off companies like the York Pullman which the tourist office recommends but which is so expensive compared to the locals' choices.

If you want guiding still, but with LOCAL travellers to talk to, try this one:

Apart from this, you can go all on your own out on the moors with the help of the Yorkshire Coastliner buses:

http://www.coastliner.co.uk

The Coastliner to Whitby stops in gorgeous villages like Thornton-le-Dale (of chocolate box fame) and Goathlands (of TV series "Heartbeat" fame and with sheep grazing in the village Green bus shelter).

Hello Sarah,
Glad to hear from you. If things go according to plan I will be in York on the Bank Holiday weekend in May. I have a B&B booked and now have 12 weeks to go!

Hi Louise,

If you enjoy doing your own thing, I would definately recommend the Yorkshire Coastliner bus service. This is a regular bus service, so you will stop at many places along the way. A trip to Whitby will take a bit longer than a direct tour, but you do get to see some local colour!
Try the link below
http://www.yorkshirecoastliner.co.uk/

It is a while since I have used this service, but I am guessing it will cost a bout £8 return. Be warned though, if the weather is nice and it is a bank holiday, the road between York and Whitby can be very busy, no matter how you travel...so may be try the train? hope you enjoy York and Whitby. Remember to visit the magpie fish Restaurant in Whitby fr the best fish and Chips!, Jill

Travel Tips for York

York Rally.

by miksu

A three day cycle rally is held every June at the racecourse in York.Thousands of cyclists attend each year fron all parts of the UK.On the Saturday and Sunday there is two large tents selling bikes and everything to do with cycling. There is capming facilities.....grass track racing.....parades of old bikes....and on the Sunday morning everyone can go to the York Minster for church service...and after the service all the bikes parade through the streets of York,on the ride back to the racecourse.

take a walk along the river. There are many splendid buildings on the riverside, including a collection of Pubs and Restaurants. Boat trips leave from various points along the river and you can also hire small boats by the hour.

York Pass

by cheekymarieh

If you're visiting York and are planning to visit a few of the major attractions within the city, the York Pass is worth considering. It is priced at £24 for one day, £32 for two days and £36 for three days. Although initially this sounds expensive, you only have to visit a couple of the major sights to make it worthwhile.

For example, if you visit the Jorvik Viking Centre (£8.50), York Minster(£7.50) and the York Dungeon(£12.50) the ticket has more than paid for itself.

Dick Turpin's Grave

by northeast80

I never knew this was here, until another VT member showed us it.
In a very unassuming graveyard, all the other graves are slabs lying flat in the ground.
I found out that his body was buried a number of times as people kept on digging it up. Finally he was buried in quicklime across from St. George's Church in York. Which is on Peel Street,
York, YO1 9PZ.

Richmond

by Britannia2

Market town on the River Swale with a castle standing high over the town. Good variety of local pubs and country craft shops as well as some interesting eating places. Cobbled streets and wonderful vistas to hilly countryside that surrounds the town. Rather hilly in places but the centre around the largest market square I have ever seen is flat.
There are several pages here on VT should you wish to know more.
Train to Darlington (30 minutes and at least every 30 minutes or better) then bus X25 or X26 to Richmond.
