Depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want to do some sightseeing, then go to York.

I would definitely head for York.

Me too. York is compact, full of hstory, has loads of places to visit/eat at/ drink in/ within easy walking distance and is interesting for shopping too. see my pages for more details. Suggest you give Jorvik a miss unless you're absolutely desperate to visit, queues are long and it can be disappointing unless you're really into the subject. Don't miss the minster though!

I'd also vote for York.Beautiful old town centre, lots of history, good shopping. The Castle Museum is great, it's a misleading name since it deals with the daily life of normal people troughout the times, not with castles. A fascinating place. If you like Shakespeare's Richard III. don't miss the Richard III museum.

They're right, it's York

I've said it before :) York! "The history of York is the history of England".

Leeds is just an industrial and sooty city with nothing special UNLESS you enjoy Rhodin sculptures, national armouries, expensive shopping or student clubbing...

Let’s be fair, Leeds has got lots going for it: the universities, cultural diversity, great museums, mega night life, wicked shopping etc but you're better visiting Leeds with someone who knows their way around.

York with it's river, city wall and historic buildings is certainly more visitor friendly than Leeds.

Hey, I wasn't knocking the armouries! LOL...those things I mentioned are the GOOD things about Leeds.

Travel Tips for York

York by Twilight

by barryg23

One of the best times to explore York is in the early evening. The streets are much quieter as most of the tourists have left, and you can appreciate the fine buildings and get a better sense of the history, especially in the quiet, narrow streets in the old centre, such as Goodramgate, Petergate & Stonegate.

The Shambles...

by CandS

This street is known as The Shambles... I love the way the buildings all fall into the street...I think they were built like this to get the most of the floor space... :) We had a great time looking around here...

Not so innocent street

Just off High Petergate is the little Grape Lane with handicraft shops and similar. Don't think this is a quaint old York name to do with historical wine drinking with Richard III. Nope, this is just an abbreviation of what was once called Grope a C**t Lane! Home of York's best known brothel...

Merchant Adventurer's Hall

by hayward68

This building was built in 1357 -61 and is one of the largest of its kind in Britain. "The timbered Great Hall was where merchants conducted their business and held their courts and social events. The Undercroft or hospital is where they cared for the poor." (from website)
It's quite an interesting building and the floor is very wonky, pretty much all at an angle.
The Hall is available to rent out for functions and I think it would make a pretty cool wedding hall if you so desired. Just watch the floor when you dance!
Admission is £2.
It's located between the streets named Piccadilly and Fossgate.

The Yorkshire Museum

by sandysmith

Situated in the green expanse of the Museum gardens is the Yorkshire Museum, which displays some of the finest Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Medieval treasure ever discovered in Britain. Unique thirteenth century statues from the nearby St Mary's Abbey can also be seen here.
On a warm summer's day though it seemed most people wanted to laze on the grass outside.
