Possibly the best Guesthouse in York

We found the St. Raphael in a travel artlicle on one of my wife's magazines, and booked it on the strength of the article.
We stayed for three nights in the depths of a very cold February, as we started reviewing the area with a possibility of retiring around York or nearby.
The St. Raphael is situated on a side road off Bootham, one of the old roads leading out of York in a North westerly direction. It is a stones throw from the city walls and the Minster.
The Guest House is run by a young couple, Zoe and Dom, who were friendly, attentive and very responsive to any suggestions or requests. There are lots of nice touches, like real fresh flowers in your room and in the breakfast room, every day.
Rooms are comfortable and en-suite, and the breakfasts really excellent using locally sourced eggs, bacon, sausages etc. Its enough to set uoi up for the whole day.

The St. Raphael is not the cheapest Guest House in York - we have stayed elsewhere, but we will be returning to the St. Raphael. A real "hidden gem", and its a Guest House I would recommend to anyone.

Unique Quality: High standards of comfort, food and cleanliness, with very friendly and attentive staff.

More about St. Raphael Guest House

What a Gem!

by TripAdvisor Member love2travelmorel

We stayed at St Raphael for a weekend break 2 weeks ago after looking on a hotel website and reading the reviews. We were not disappointed. The reviews were spot on. The room was spotlessly clean and welcoming, bed comfy, with all the comforts you needed. As good as a 4* hotel.
After a long 5 hour journey and hungry, we were met by by Les and Allan with a warm welcome, a tray of tea, shown our room and pointed in the direction of a great restaurant for dinner 5 mins away. Despite being so close to the centre of York it was blissfully quiet at night, ensuring a peaceful nights sleep.
Fabulous location, 5 mins walk to restaurants, 10 minutes max to the Minster . Fabulous breakfast, cold," full yorkshire" (or both!) with Les's variety of fresh baked bread to wake you up in the morning.
Great info given where to go , where to eat, how to get there.
Can't fault St Raphael at all. Nothing was too much trouble for Les and Allan, their enthusiasm and love of York makes your stay even more special. Parking wasn't a problem either - what a bonus! We highly recommend any one to stay here.

Perfect weekend

What a reception we recieved , having arrived early because of an extremely quick journey from Kent. We were able to get into our room complete with very welcome cup of Yorkshire tea and piece of cake as the owners had just returned from holiday themselves and had nobody staying the night before. This in effect gave us the best part of an extra day.
The room was light, airy and spotlessly clean, with a very adequate bathroom. Despite being off a main road into York centre by about 150m, there is no real noise.
Breakfast is seved in a room that would be as inviting in the winter as it is in summer. The food is locally sourced and cooked to perfection by Al, supplemented by Les's home baked bread.
Les and Al are very knowledgable about York and its hinterland which meant we were able to fill our time to the limit.
Well done Al and Les!

Bravo!!!!!

What more could you ask for? On arrival we were welcomed with coffee and Yorkshire Tea Bread. The rooms were spotless, well decorated and fragrant. Finishings were first class and what you would like in your own home. We were pleased with the range of drinkmaking facilities in the room (and very nice biscuits!!)

Breakfast was fabulous, There was a wide range of cold breakfast including fresh fruit and cereals. There was also freshly baked hot bread to accompany a full Engliush breakfast which was superb.

Al and Les were excellent hosts and clearly took great pride in their guest house.

To sum it all off we have two pretty difficult to please teenage daughters who were impressed with the stay so there you go.

It is a fabulous place to stay but the stairs are little creaky so make sure you stay in the upper floor rooms or make sure that you are the last ones in at night when everyone else is asleep!!

Cheers

What a little gem

by TripAdvisor Member Stuartlin64

What a delightful guest house close to the city centre. We have just returned home after a 3 night break at St Raphael, York. We were very much welcomed into Les and Al's home which was bright, airy and comfortable. Our room was fresh and modern, clean with lovely decor. Breakfast was a treat in itself with lots of choice and lovely freshly baked bread. Would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone. We will certainly make this our first choice next time we decide to visit York.

Simply the best B&B

by TripAdvisor Member JoandAl

We couldn't fault it. We arrived earlier than expected. Got a very warm welcome with an offer of a cup of tea, even though we were not checking in until later. Les is the world's friendliest landlady. The room was spotless. Everything worked . The breakfast was excellent with a choice of hot, or cold, together with warm bread, baked that morning. Plenty of coffee and a choice of 3 different breads for the toast. The cooked breakfast was perfect and plenty of it.

We were madeto feel like it was a home from home and have no hestitation in recommending it. You won't find better.

Superb attention to detail...

by TripAdvisor Member WilsonRoss

We wanted a B&B to accommodate 3 adults in a single room, and stumbled accross this superb guest house. We were very grateful for the freshly brewed tea on arrival, access to a communal fridge with fresh milk and bottled drinking water, and lots of other little details that lift this accommodation well above the average. Hard to beat!

Lovely stay

We arrived on the Sunday, the start of a 3 night break, to a warm welcome and a wealth of information about the best places to eat and the best of York. Al and Les make you feel at ease so you really feel at home.

The rooms were modern bright and exceptionally clean and the Breakfasts really set us up for the day. There was so much choice and it was all unhurried and relaxing.

St Raphaels is about a 10 minute walk, if that, into York. York is a fantastic place with so much to see and do and St Raphaels is a great choice to make your stay even nicer.

The place to stay in York

by TripAdvisor Member lbeachbum

Recently stayed 2 nights at this great B&B. York was a highlight of our UK roadtrip. The St. Raphael was also a highlight. Everything was perfect. The rooms - bright and spotlessly clean with all amenities. The location is excellent, park the car and forget it. It's an easy walk to all the main attractions. Breakfast was fresh, plentiful and made to order. Nice touches not found in other B&B's such as, cold bottled water available in a fridge in the dining room 24/7. Les and Al expertly run this fantastic B&B, and are genuinely passionate about it and wanting you to enjoy your stay with them.

Loved the Location

by TripAdvisor Member JohnnyReb

Great location for touring York. Literally 5 minutes from the Minster. The room was clean, comfortable and comes with an outstanding English breakfast AND parking.
A great failure of most British is the inability to give directions but the proprietors,Les and Al,do not fall into that stereotype. Their directions were spot on.
