Just moved here...

by Cezzareemo

Hi. I moved to York last week and am looking for some stuff to get into. Is there a local paper (or website) advertising bands/ drama groups / book clubs, that sort of thing. Very grateful for any help!

drama groups should be there... I heard they play those kind of mystery plays again...
but not sure if participating is for every one.
(That was info from the tourist information office)

wowww York is beautiful! and you are going to live there :-)
lucky you!

You will find most of what you're looking for at: www.thisisyork.co.uk

There is also the York Advertiser free paper which comes in your letter box regularly (if not, you find it around town).

Finally, the county library just before Lendal Bridge has a notice board.

Yes, York is a great city but unfortunately hit by a lot of blows in recent years making it a bit tense between students from other parts of the country (and commuting Londoners) at the university, and locals who keep loosing their jobs as industry after industry closes. Soon there's just tourism left :-( My husband and his dad both built trains (York is a great railway junction) and the factory is now closed. Soon one of the two chocolate factories will close (Terry's) - ironically to produce in Sweden (I'm Swedish) and Belgium instead, and so on.

But yes, it's a wonderful historical city! Enjoy the surroundings too - Castle Howard, the coastline and the two National Parks. Feel free to ask anything you need. :-)

YORK MINSTER - THE WEST WINDOW

by LoriPori

The bottom row of pictures in the WEST WINDOW illustrates eight archbishops of York. In the row above are the Apostles. Next are scenes from the earthly life of Christ and His Mother. The top panels depict a scene set in Heaven, showing Mary crowned as Queen.
The Design in the stonework at the top represents the Sacred Heart of Christ.

York is very cosmopolitan. It has a lively mixture of tourists, locals and students from the University. Also, due to it's strong Viking connections, there are often a lot of Scandinavians on exchange vists, indeed in February there is a Viking festival, with longboat races.

Dame Judi Dench Walk

by yooperprof

I kept coming back here every day I was in York, but I never did see Dame Judi!

The finest Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria of our time was born in York some time ago. (As a gentleman, I don't want to reveal in what year.) She also attended Mount School here.

Dame Judi Dench walk is along the Ouse river, on the town side, just to the north and west of Lendal Bridge.

Snickelways

by sandysmith

Between the major streets of York are innumerable tiny alleyways or shortcuts between shops and markets. Some snickelways are long, like Coffee Yard (by the Red Devil on Stonegate) where Barley Hall can be found, whereas the delightfully named Pope's Head Alley is only 31 inches wide!
