Cheapest transport fares - London to York

by Hilary72

Hi,

Myself and a friend hope to travel from London to York on Mon 6 Feb. We will be arriving into London Stansted airport. Can anyone advise us of the cheapest possible return train fare and from which London station we need to leave from, departing around 5 pm or afterwards. Many thanks for your help. Hilary

RE: Cheapest transport fares - London to York

Hi,
Some good deals at GNER at the moment . London ( think its kings cross ) to Leeds is £20. Not sure of cost from Leeds to York but its only 20 miles so cannot cost that much.
Cannot help with the stansted to kings cross part.
link here http://www.gner.co.uk/gner/greatvaluefares/. Fares need booking in advance or are much more expensive.
Mark

Look at www.nationalrail.co.uk for timetables and fares. Www.thetrainline.com for actually purchasing tickets in advance.

Travel Tips for York

ST. MICHAEL LE BELFREY CHURCH

by LoriPori

An Anglican Church ( Church of England) ST. MICHAEL LE BELFREY is in the heart of York, near York Minster.
Saxon burials are evidence that St. Michaels's is of early origin. The present Church was built between 1525 and 1537, during King Henry VIII's split from Rome. John Forman, the Minster's master mason, was responsible for the Tudor Gothic style with Renaissance influence. The 1848 Bell Tower is a replica of the earliest known bell tower, first depicted in 1705. It was, and still is, the largest Parish Church in York. (The Minster is not a Parish Church).
Guy Fawkes was baptized here on April 16, 1570

YORK MINSTER - CHAPTER HOUSE

by LoriPori

Built in the decorated Gothic style and octagonal in shape, the CHAPTER HOUSE is one of the most beautiful rooms ever created. It was begun in 1260 and completed in 1286. Its walls contain some of the Minster's finest carvings, most dated from 1270 to 1280.
The Chapter House is still used as a meeting place by the Dean and Chapter. Each wall contains six seats - to emphasise the equality of all members.
I thought it was a simply amazing place.

Recipe: Yorkshire apple pudding

by ATLC

120g self-raising flour
1 beaten egg
300 ml. milk
1 sharp apple
50g lard or 2tbs vegetable oil
---
Put flour in bowl. Make well in centre and put in egg. Start beating, bringing in flour gradually, then slowly add milk. Peel and core apple, then grate into batter, and stir. Put fat into a 25x18 cm baking tray and place in a preheated oven at 220 degrees Celsius. When fat is hot, pour in batter quickly. Bake for 25-30 min. until browned and cooked through. Serve sprinkled with caster sugar, or with honey or golden syrup.

Off the Shambles

by tvor

While wandering down the Shambles, one of my friends saw a little lane and went down to see what was there. She found a little oasis of peace. A church yard and old church away from the streams of tourists not 50 yards away.

While i was making my way down the same street, i investigated a sign leading me between two buildings and out to a small market courtyard. These are the kinds of little interesting discoveries you can make in York, even while traversing the main tourist "drag".

Lady's Row

by barryg23

Lady's Row is a collection of 11 small houses on Goodramgate which still contain evidence of their 14th Century origin. I like the way the house slope outwards onto the streets - it almost feels like the upper storeys will fall into the street below.
