City Walls
by sandysmith
Walking the walls of the city is the best way to see York - probably the best views of the Minster too. They form an almost complete circuit - that honour belongs to the city of Chester. Its a lovely walk - about 3 miles long - with friends too. In some places it is quite narrow and single file is necessary. in other places it is wider with a drop down to the ground below.

This is a view inside from the walls of Clifford's Tower. It was such windy day, and I must admit that the narrow stairs and wall did not make me feel very secure! Also, remembering the chilling history made it a moving experience overall.
Packing List

As York is in England waterproofs are a must anytime of the year just in case. There should be chemists and supermarkets around to buy this kind of thing. York has some very photogenic areas so plenty of film is a must, but is readily available.
If you like York you will like Beverley

Beverley in East Yorkshire is a minature version of York and so if you like York you will also like Beverley. There are several pages on VT , including mine, on this fine town. Like York it has a Minster and is also good for shopping and wandering around its quaint streets.

If you're coming into or out of York on the A59 look out for a turn off to the village of Nun Monkton. On the map at the bottom of the page you can see Moor Monkton, well Nun Monkton is the next turning on the right as you head out of York.
Nun Monkton lies at the end of a two mile stretch of road that leads only to the village, so there is no through traffic. The village is set around a green, which is one of the largest in England. The green sports a Maypole which is 45 feet high, and also a duckpond (with ducks!). The village green is a great spot for a picnic.
At the very end of the village is the Church, at the end of a driveway. Clustered around the Church are some very nice houses that used to be part of the country estate.
The pub in Nun Monkton is The Alice Hawthorne and it is an excellent, typically English, country pub, serving good food, wine, and beer.
Near to Nun Monkton is the famous battle site of Marston Moor which lies off the A59 on the opposite side to Nun Monkton.
