A hostel in a Georgian Mansion

Stayed here 29th Jan 2007 for the York VT Meeting.
£15 a night for an 12 bed female dorm plus free breakfast.
Just had time to pay and drop my stuff off (in the free luggage storage) before going to the VT meeting. It was a beautiful Georgian mansion house, my room had huge ceilings, 6 bunk beds, views of the rooftops and the Yorkshire wheel.
The toilet/shower rooms were on the next level, good showers- they had enough 'dry' space and stayed warm!
The kitchen, bar, laundry, outdoor seats and BBQ were all on basement level down some very steep narrow steps, not good for the elderly, injured or disabled.
The free breakfast, served between 8-10 on weekends was great, toast, cerial, yoghurt, tea, and real coffee.
They had lot of information on York and Yorkshire, internet, only one computer though, I couldn't see a TV room, though you're likely to be out most of the time.

Unique Quality: The amazing building and right in the centre of the town.

Great accomodation! good value great location!

We stayed here overnight with my tour group. York Backpackers is a great hostel, very clean, the staff are great and friendly. The rooms and bedding were all definitely up to par for a hostel, the building itself is quite lovely. The bathrooms are clean and the Dungeon Bar is a definite must! It's in a fantastic location as well, walking distance to most night life, and York Minster along with transporation links. I would definitely go back there for sure! They don't charge for bed linen and they have great group rates and great breakfast!

Unique Quality: Mickelgate House is a beautiful building to begin with so that was a great plus. The Dungeon Bar is in the basement, it's small, cozy, and can get pretty full down there, but some really cheap drinks and you always meet great people. We had a ball! Plus, for big groups, they can arrange a dinner feast/buffet as they did for us, with tons and tons of food and wine for a reasonable price! Breakfast is also great as well, continental and it comes with your room.
