Hexham's Fawlty Towers

On arrival at this hotel, having paid in full by credit card in advance, we were told there was no hot water until 8pm. It turned out that there was a problem with the boiler and 8pm was just wishful thinking. There was no hot water for the duration of the stay. The only person on duty was a young man who told us he was only helping out and usually worked in the restaurant next door. He may have told us this to head us off at the pass. When we asked to speak to the manager we were told he was away in London and didn't want to be contacted.

The rooms were not dirty but they had seen better days (in the 1970s). There were no lampshades, no table lights and the fridge (which may be why it had 2 star) in one resident's room contained 3 boxes of pizza remains and a tin foil take away tin (the contents of which were not examined). The whole place was shabby, with stained bedspreads and very dubious pillows. In one room the kettle didn't work and there was a gale blowing through the large gap at the bottom of the ill-fitting window. Do not stay in this hotel if you can avoid it.
