Ye Olde Bell Hotel: 17th century coaching inn

by suvanki

Barnby Moor is one of Nottinghamshires smallest villages, and had many coaching Inns as The Great North Road used to pass through. It was a popular spot for Highwaymen, who had easy pickings in this isolated area. Known as The Blue Bell in the 18th Century, this was a very busy inn.

A tradition that may not last much longer, is the Boxing Day Hunt that meets here.

Nowadays this hotel is popular for wedding receptions, so other guests could find slow service at the bar, crowds of wedding guests, cramming into the small bar and lounges,

The gardens are pleasant though, if the weathers kind!

The disco could probably disturb some guests as it can finish around 1am.

I visited as a wedding guest, when there was another wedding party there at the same time.

The food was very good, hot and well cooked/presented.
staff friendly and efficient serving meals, but bar service was slow.

Nearest banks etc Retford, about 3 miles away.

Traditional styled lounges and bar area. Oak panelling walls, log fires, leaded windows.

St Ledger cocktail bar has prints/horse racing memorabilia. (10 miles from Doncaster, an hour from Yorks racecourses)

landscaped gardens

Surrounded by countryside, handy for visiting Sherwood Forest and Nottinghamshire/ Derbyshire/Lincolnshires attractions.

30 mins from Nottingham, 45 miles from Sheffield.

Retford Station 3 miles.

Off A1/A638

West of Nottingham is...

by Pavlik_NL

West of Nottingham is Ilkeston, a little bit further you can find the village of Stanley Common and there is where my (aunt) Fran and (uncle) Roger live. It was great to stay there and to enjoy the countryside. We were also happy to see them again after too long time in these busy times. But then again as tip for all who visit England: Bed & Breakfasts are the best way to get around and enjoy the British hospitality.
