More about Nottingham Gateway Hotel
My sister had her wedding here....Why?
My sister's wedding was held here (the service, photos, dinner, dancing...), and she is very particular so I was expecting great things (especially for the price). It had a nice modern entryway, but then was extremely bland and Hampton Inn like. There were no nice restaurants or pubs nearby, and there was no outdoor seating or outdoor areas at all (just a parking lot and then a very busy road). Luckily it was 3 mins walk from a tram stop into town, so we didn't feel completely trapped. The staff were quite rude (not even letting the mother of the bride check in 10 mins early). The place was very noisey (lots of drunk people running banging on guests doors at 4am etc). If you stay on the weekend, make sure you're not over the function suite as they usually have something in their 'til 1am which will rattle your whole bedroom with no apology from the staff. The bathrooms were in need of a serious makeover, mouldy and cracked, with no water pressure for a morning shower and our sink tap/faucet fell off in our hands. The rooms were a good size though, the bed great and the English breakfast was very good. Next time I visit my sister I will stay in Beach Lodge BandB.
not that bad
my wife and i stayed at this hotel for 3 nights june 9th 10th n 11th. we only used the hotel really for the room and breakfast as we used it as a place to rest as went to the donnington rock festival. for us the hotel was ideal, but there was a problem with breakfast on our last day when we turned up at 9.45 (it shuts for breakfast at 10) to find all the hot stuff covered up and being taken away and we were not asked or allowed to have some. this included coffee and tea. so for that i give this hotel a 3
Really nice, standard hotel
We went to an event at Newark County Showground and had booked to stay here. Don't know if it was the appalling directions given by multimap.com or whether that was the best way to come but it took us an hour to get to. We drove through some pretty dodgy places to get to the hotel, but it was a welcome "oasis" when we arrived. Just a standard hotel really, a bit like a Travelodge or somewhere like that. Looks nice from the outside - a big glass front with fountains, etc. Check-in was very quick and we spent the evening in the bar, as we didn't realise Nottingham was only 3 miles away! Staff were all very friendly and breakfast was as-much-as-you-can-eat, which we took advantage of and regretted later... Rooms were spacious and clean. You can't ask for much more for £44 per room per night (booked at lastminute.com)! Thanks for a nice stay!
£15 for a taxi into town!
A group of us (5 girls) stayed here for the night on the 15th July, the hotel was quite easy to get to if you don't use multi map! the outside seemed very impressive and when we arrived there was a wedding parting just going in so we thought that it must have been a really good place to stay. It certainly wasnt the best hotel i've stayed in, but it wasnt the worst either. I can imagine that this hotel is used for lots of stag/hen do's and groups of mates wanting a night out in Nottingham. There were a few stag do's staying there and also some other groups too. It was the cheapest hotel we could find and for £17 p/p (lastminute.com) we really didnt mind.
All i will say is that the bed was comfy, the room was quite big, the bathroom was disgusting, and go early for breakfast as we had the same problem as seen in a previous review....all the food had gone and they were not going to be putting any more out at 9:45 (breakfast finishes at 10)
A taxi into the town was £15 which we all thought was a complete rip off! (£15 for a mini bus, £10 for a car)
there were no outdoor areas to sit and with the weather the way it is at the moment it would have been nice to sit in the sunshine with a glass of pimms!
there were no nice pubs or restaurants in the area and the one recommended to us from reception...(the beefeater just up the road) was vile! the food was disgusting and we sent all of our meals back.
all in all it was a cheap and cheery night in Nottingham but we wont be staying there again!
if any of the stag do that we were sitting with read this...please get in touch! Carl/Dwaine are the only names we remember!
When you first look at pictures of this hotel on the net you think you have found heaven but in reality you are closer to hell than anything. From the outside it looked really mordern and cosy but when we were making our way to the room we knew we had made a mistake. The corridors were dirty and the paneling on the walls an doors showed signs of serious wear and tear.
the room was ghastly with very old and worn linen. We flinched to think we were going to sleep on such dirty sheets. Everything in this room was worn. We had thought we had found a good deal as this hotel was going for a fraction of what other hotels were offering but we later found out the real reason - their standards were only a fraction of what they should have been.
However the carvery was simply excellent - burnt my fingers though. By the way the staff at reception were not very helpful either. They looked pretty disinterested in us!
Asked for a non-smoking room both at time of booking and again and check-in but was given the keys to a room which stunk to high heaven of cigs and came complete with ashtray. The reception staff agreed to move us but only before instructing us to heave our heavy bags all the way downstairs again before giving us a key to a room next door from where we had just come from!
The hotel was hot and humid and there is no airconditioning. Clearly the staff had cleaned the rooms to the best of their ability but...Nottingham Gate...here's a tip since you obviously are not picking up on the feedback on this site yet... DETTOL MOULD AND MILDEW REMOVER-works a treat to get rid of those mould spores in the bathroom.
Also not impressed with the barman who despite the fact that the bar was empty was far more interested in chatting on the phone to his friends rather than serving customers.
On the positive breakfast was good and the water-pressure in the shower was excellent.
The restaraunt staff were unpleasant and untidy, food was ok.
Dont be fooled by the "all you can eat buffet", its main course only.
Reception were pleasant, but severely understaffed.
The building seems to be falling apart, and held together with black tape, including the huge hole in the floor halfway up the staircase!
The room was absolutely horrendous! The room stunk to high heaven, and looked like it had come straight out of the sixties. As for the bathroom, theres no way i would take my clothes off in there! Disgusting!
The wallpaper was peeling everywhere, the carpet was threadbare and stained with god only knows what! And as for the noise- we were directly above a wedding, with the loudest music ever heard, which shook the whole room, and didnt finish until early hours of the morning.
The bar seemed ok, though very overpriced and with dirty glasses.
Its ok for a budget hotel, but you get what you pay for. -But you still pay too much there!
and the award for worst hotel goes to......
we booked this hotel through another website who described it as 'newly reburbished'. absolute rubbish, this hotel is in dire need of refurbishment, never again wil i look for a cheap deal. the place stank!! the bathroom was disgusting. the first night I slept in a chair as the bed was making my skin crawl, and was making me sneeze with dust. all i really wanted to do was to pack up and go to another hotel. just could not wait to get out of there!
they have a glass lift in the middle of the foyer which you could barely see through with dirt, big holes in the ceilings, carpet torm up, walls stained, floors stained, and the smell was something else!
to my surprise there were several weddings on, who on earth would celebrate their marriage in a dump ike that!!!
it also seems to be in the middle of a dodgy area, thought we had been given wrong directions at first!
check out the photos, only 2 there, i had more but are over the size limit, cant figure out how to upload them
If you have a car don't stay here!
We booked this hotel for a 2 night stay through another website. Although we read the reviews, we thought we would give it a chance anyway. Bad move! We arrived on the first night about 9pm, the receptionist was quite friendly. As other posters have stated on first impression you think it will be a lovely hotel. We were on the second floor and walking down the corridor we did think it could perhaps do with a lick of paint. Upon entering our room we weren't overly impressed with the decor but it did appear clean and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom however had seen better days, there were some damp marks on the ceiling, there was no soap dispenser by the sink although the bracket was still there. However, we did like the size of the bath towels as they are quite large compared to other hotels. We looked out of the window and had a lovely view of the rubbish area!!! We had told the receptionist we didn't want a wake up call as after the mayhem of Christmas we wanted to relax a bit. However, at 7am we were woken by the brewery delivery as this area was also underneath our window!!! Extremely noisy and this went on for a good half hour. We fell back to sleep only to be woken about 8.15 by the sound of scrubbing against the wall from next doors room! We did wonder what was going on! At this point we decided to get up as we realised we weren't going to be able to have a peaceful lie in. As we left the room to go down to breakfast we noticed decorators coming out of the room making the noise. It appears they were scrubbing the walls down ready for painting! Breakfast was ok, have had worse. We then went to the car as we had planned to go into Nottingham shopping, only to find that someone had tried to break the lock into my partners car! Thankfully they hadn't broken any windows, unlike the car next to us who had their rear window smashed. We went back to reception who promptly gave us a form to fill in. Whilst doing this we noticed two other couples filling in the same forms. We rang the police line that we were given and a very helpful constable took our details and said he would call us back with an incident number. Whilst I was talking to him, two other couples had come back to the desk reporting break ins on their cars and in fact one of them asked to speak to the PC when I had finished. We also complained about the noise that had kept us awake. Whilst waiting for the constable to ring us back, we decided that we were going to check out as neither of us felt that we wanted to stay there in case the car was broken into again. The hotel said we could have a full refund but we would have to go through the website we booked it through. Whilst we were at the desk we got chatting to another guest getting a refund. Although his car hadn't been broken into, the shower had disintegrated in his hand when he had tried to move it. Another guest staying there while his house move was going through, told us that it had been reported in the local newspaper that 14 cars were broken into in one night there. We saw about 6 couples reporting break ins and we went to our car at 10.30. I don't know if there might have been any others prior to this.
My recommendation would be, do not stay at this hotel as the staff seemed very nonchalant about the service that the guests were receiving and the lack of security is a worry. Yes, they have a few CCTV cameras but what good are they? The only reason we knew that is because the duty manager told another guest they would check them later. This hotel should really have had barriers as most hotels do.
If you do have to stay at this hotel then do not take a car. It's a shame as the location is perfect for seeing Nottingham.
It is true that the hotel does suffer from problems of cars been broken into, (I should know I live in Nottingham) a group of us decided to stay the night after a party rather then pay for taxis home, as cost was about the same. Arrived to see a brand new renault Megane sat outside with no windows left in it, very nearly took my car home and get a taxi back, we parked ours cars in the middle of the car park so visable from the function room, thank fully we had no problems. At around 10.30 a group of kids from the council estate behind decided it would be fun to try to check into the hotel, they were walking in and out of the hotel from front to back door shouting, swearing, knocking furniture around, the staff did not challenge them (neither would I) so why if it is so apparent that the hotel has these problems is security not beefed up, the design of the hotel is a haven for car theifs, rude boy racers doing circuits round the car park, and kids to hang around, simple answear gates on the front! Rooms were fair, nothing amazing but fine for £40 per night, would have to say sorry for the guests staying above our function room as the noise from the disco goes straight up, my room had one of those awful air freshner things that made my nose run, could not hunt it down to remove it. Mixed report from others in our party, some found rooms great, some moved room twice, the master suite was a joke, the grapes in the fruit bakset looked more like raisins! Seems the rooms over the side of the function room were much nicer than on the other wing, in fact almost quite trendy. Have to say thought hotel was clean and good value, but I can understand the worry of crime will put some people off. However worth a nights stay, even just for the "cross roads motel" style dinning room!
