Winter

by mark711

Hi all,

Mark here again. I'd like to ask about winter in Nottingham. What are the temperatures like in winter? How many layers do I typically need to wear? Thanks!

Mark

Hi Mark
Winter is damp and wet rather than very cold,so waterproof wear rather than artic clothes,we sometimes get hard frosts but not very often,i suppose the average temp would be 5 centigrade

Verry damp and very wet...which feels a lot colder than frosty -10 or so. I lived in Leicester for a year and I felt the winter was a lot worse than back home in Norway where it's really snowy and frosty.

Long underpants are recommended but not required, could come in handy if you plan on staying there for a long time. Otherwise, a t-shirt, shirt and sweater (preferrably woolen) and a water- and windproof jacket with a zipper in front should do the trick. Yes, and don't forget a hat and a pair of gloves.

These answers are all good but being English, I dont really bother covering up against the elements that much as then you are going to have to find somewhere to put your coat in every building you go into as they will be heated. Can be a pain in the ass in the pub!!

Depends, I suppose, on how 'hard' you are (or think you are, or want to appear). I think UK cold feels colder because it's a damp cold, not the crisp frostiness I imagine occurs elsewhere. Long-lasting snow is highly unlikely, but damp, raw, sleety days are very probable. Windchill exists. So three/four layers on top usually.....t-shirt and/or shirt, woolly jumper or thick sweatshirt/warm fleece or jacket. Waterproof outer top layer is essential. Scarf, hat and gloves essential too. Think about your feet as well, trainers are ok but neither warm nor waterproof. You probably need boots of some sort (not necessarily hiking boots) and thicker socks than you might otherwise wear. Long underpants are not something I have encountered(I live near Leicester)but perhaps I'm just inexperienced in such matters. :-)

Thanks for all your helpful inputs! I'd definitely bring more waterproof jackets over. Thanks!

Nottingham is my home and it does get cold here, but when i go out clubbin in the town i dont tend to wear warm clothes as it is a pain when you want to dance because it gets hot.

The Olde Trip To Jerusalum

by Nixter01

One of the best known pubs in Nottingham is Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalum, generally regarded as the oldest pub in England.
Established in the 12th Century, the inner walls of the Trip ( as its known ) are carved out of the sandstone under the csatle. It also serves anything from the traditional fine ales in a pub to good ' pub grub ' and is a experience like nothing else !

Traditional theatre

by iwys about Theatre Royal

This is Nottingham's traditional theatre. Whereas the more modern Nottingham Playhouse features contemporary theatre and modern dance, the grand old Theatre Royal has opera, Gilbert & Sullivan, christmas pantomime etc.

Opera North perform here every season.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

by CliffClaven

Old Cliffie is always amused when he sees those signs in the States proclaiming the venerable age of some shop or restaurant: Established 1957, Since 1976, etc. They ought to come to Nottingham and take a look at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. England's oldest pub has been dispensing ale and beer in the same place since 1189. The food is pretty average pub grub, but they serve an excellent Jerusalem bitter - and nothing beats supping a good pint on a warm summer day and knowing that people have been doing the same thing in the same location for more than 800 years.
