Travel Tips for Nottingham

Oldest professionnal football team in the world

by amsterdam_vallon

Nicknamed The Magpies, the club is one of two professional football clubs in Nottingham, the other being their old enemies Nottingham Forest. The Magpies play their home games at the Meadow Lane stadium and play in a black and white striped kit, which was the inspiration for Juventus's strip of the same design.

Though they have not won a great deal of major silverware in their history, County are considered to be one of the most famous 'little' clubs in English football.

Clubs in Newark

by ker13 about Caesar's Palace

This is Newark's only club, as far as I know. It's slightly trashy a la "Limelight", but it's not very different from North American clubs. Dance music and people trying to feel you up. Good drinks and great lay-out, 2 floors. Really beautiful building, I think it used to be a bank. Hint: get friendly with the bouncers so you don't wait outside. club-attire, i.e. no jeans or sneakers, lots of sequins and skin

Good pub food

by bonio about Kean's Head

City centre pub with good food and beers to go with it. Very tasty food on our visit in a small and comfortable pub, Mrs Bonio very happy with the vegetarian choices, Mr Bonio impressed by the food and real ales on offer. Recommended, give it a try.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

by iwys

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem claims to be the oldest pub in Britain. It reputedly gets its name from the fact that Crusaders gathered here before setting off for the Holy Lands. It was originally the brewhouse for Nottingham Castle and it was probably built shortly after the original castle was established in 1086 .

The date on the wall, 1189, was the year Richard the Lionheart was crowned and embarked on the Third Crusade, and the year in which many of the Crusaders gathered here.

The half-timbered buildings you can see at the front today were added between 1650 and 1660. The warren of small bars inside are built in the sandstone caves of the original brewhouse, and have uneven, bare rock walls. They are pleasantly cool in summer, but can seem cold and damp in winter, although you can sit close to the electric heaters they put in the bars. Have a beer here: it's listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.

Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin

by Tom_Fields

This is one of Nottingham's finest medieval churches. It's the oldest parish church in Nottinghamshire, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book of William the Conqueror. This is at least the third church to stand on this site. Most of it was built during the 14th century.
