Travel Tips for Banbury

Unusual Signs

by alancollins

Banbury has a number of unusual traffic signs and I saw this one on Concorde Avenue. Please do not be offended by my thoughts on what this sign could mean.
One way ticket only required on this coach.
or
I wondered where all the coach parties had gone.
or
Never knew it was such a popular attraction.
I'm sure you can think of dozens more.

Cancelled water fountain. Fate takes a hand

by alancollins

"The fountain"

This should have been a story about a splendid 4 tier water fountain that took pride of place in the garden instead we now have a rather modest lamp post instead. The fountain was meant to have been a wedding anniversary present for Lin. The first problem arose when Lin was preparing the garden for its arrival. There are a number of steps to go down into the garden. For some reason as Lin was walking down the steps one of them collapsed and her foot went through the top of the step causing her to bang her leg and toes. That required a visit to the local A & E to ascertain there was no broken bones. The picture does not show the scale of this fountain which is 2.5m in height and weighs over 500kgs.

"The deadly steps"

The delivery date approached and we became nervous when we discovered the largest bowl for the fountain weighed 320kgs and not the estimated 150kgs we had expected. We acquired a trolley to carry the various parts into the garden. We cleared everything out of the way but thought we would need at least half a dozen strong men to lift the bowl into the required place. We obtained a quantity of cash to bribe some of our neighbours to assist with the lifting. We hoped for the best but feared the worse, anticipating either Lin or myself getting hurt and now regretting our rash purchase. We both believe in fate and in this case fate lent a hand. I had taken the day off work when we received a phone call. For some unexplained reason the delivery company had dropped the fountain off the back of the lorry and it had smashed to bits. Though Lin had really wanted the fountain it only took her a few seconds to decide we should cancelled the order before something else happened or someone was injured again.

"The substitute"

So we now have a lamp post which was easy to put up and no else was injured. The photo does not really show the scale of the lamp which is over 2.5 metres in height and lights up most of the garden. The best news was saving the money the fountain had originally cost.
