Inn For All Seasons: Former 16th century coaching inn
Before we left Australia, we had a debate as to the accommodation on our first night – small, intimate space with lots of character or a large hotel with less character and more facilities (all mod-cons, pool etc). We chose the former and very glad we did.
Not only was the restaurant wonderful (see separate tip), but the Inn For All Seasons fitted the 'lots of character' bill perfectly. An old 16th century coaching inn sitting aside the A40 just outside Burford (heading towards Cheltenham), we were upgraded to the 4-poster bed room (a Sunday night outside peak season, we were the only guests). A large, comfortable room with a firm bed and plenty of space (and huge bathroom), it was also devoid of those amenities you think you need (plasma screen, DVD player etc) and so was more in fitting with the character of the building.
The hotel also has lots of outdoor space – a terrace as part of the pub as well as a large garden at the back. And whilst not in use the night we were there, a conservatory adds more space for summer lunches and dinners.
Breakfast the following morning was huge and delicious - newspaper provided (ordered the night before). And everyone was incredibly friendly. Its location also meant that before dinner we went for a long walk across the fields to the local Little Barrington village (see separate tip) - perfect to blow away some of the jetlag cobwebs, having been driving since getting off the plane.
As it is an old building, note there's no lift and stairs up to the first floor is tight when carrying large suitcases.
Incredibly friendly and great food as well as a very comfortable stay.
