Where can you spend the wedding night in or near Swindon??

by Natrix

A friend of mine in Swindon is gettting married and they're searching for a beautiful place to spent the night. The price shouldn't be more than 130 Pounds per person. Any suggestions?
They're also searching for a nice place for the honeymoon. It has to be somewhere in England as the girl is from Ukraine and needs a visa for any other country :-(
Thanks for your tips!!

When are they getting married? It makes a difference if I'm recommending a winter or summer destination in Britain. Having said that, I can start with some city destinations with a romantic feel...

Edinburgh! Very romantic and full of things to do and see all year round.

York with its city walls to walk can be romantic if you also stay somewhere within the walls.

Thanks for your tips! The marriage is very soon, November 11th.
The hard part is to find a nice, but affordable hotel. I don't think newlyweds leave the house so often... :-)

Don't know any hotels near Swindon but ask the VT members from Reading, Swindon and thereabouts.

As for York, here are some romantic ones with great locations for a possible honeymoon.

Making the honeymoon a mix between York and Edinburgh would also work since York is on the main railway line (and motorway) to Scotland on the East Coast...

Edinburgh has loads of cosy hotels.

I don't know how many of you have seen the movie 'The Saint' with Val Kilmer in the starring role as the British con artist turned super-spy?

Well, some parts of the movie (towards the ending) was filmed right here. Yes, right at THIS spot where I stood!!! O.K., go buy/ rent the VCD now. :-)

The Views From St. Mary's Church...

by coceng

While going down the winding small steps of St. Mary's Church, I caught a glimpse of these 2 pidgeons, 'hatching' their eggs !
I think they looked at me in bewilderment...especially the sudden flash from my cheap camera, maybe would make them dizzy for a few seconds.
I hope their eggs are okay though...

Scholar's Guide to Oxford Pubs

Want an 'objective' view on pub ratings and critiques? Take a look at The Scholar's Guide to Oxford Pubs at An honest look at each of Oxford's historical, traditional and very much Oxonian pubs littered around the city. Personally, I agree wholeheartedly with the ratings, which are symbolized by little pints of beers! Definitely take a look at this site as it could be very helpful in designing your itinerary of pub crawls! :-)

An oasis of calm just off the High

by RufusFrog

The University Botanical Garden is a lovely spot to get away from the hubbub of the tourist and student laden streets and is full of interesting plants collected for the university over the centuries. Last time I visited, the Century cactus was in flower, but you'll have to wait another hundred years (approximately) to see it again!

It is the oldest botanical garden in Britain, founded in 1621 and beautifully sited along the border of the River Cherwell (entrance just off the High Street, nearly opposite Magdalen college).
Open daily 09:00-16:30 (16:45 in summer) except Good Friday and Christmas day.
Glasshouses only open 14:00-16:00
Price £2 April-August, donations requested at other times.

The Cowley Road - if you just...

by eddieman

The Cowley Road - if you just stick to the city centre, and don't cross Magdalen Bridge to the East of the City, you miss the most vibrant part. Ethnically diverse, lots of different restaurants and nightlife venues - well worth the walk. For a fried breakfast, nothing beats The Excelsior at the top, opposite the park, on the right.
