cambridge college is closed to public during mid-april-june what about Oxford?

by 9tigers

is it the same thing with Oxford? should I visit some other time?

Re: cambridge college is closed to public during mid-april-june what about Oxford?

I don't think so. But there are different opening times for different colleges and sometimes wedding and other parties on the premises so no visitors are allowed in at the time. So you may not be able to see all the colleges but I am sure you will still be able to visit quite a few. And the grandest of them, Christ Church will definitely be open as it incorporates the Cathedral where the service is celebrated on most days.

I can't emphacise enough the importance of good guidebooks and maps. Oxford is as foot friendly as any town ive ever been to, but to the newbie it can be a labyrinth. My first trip there I passed Brasenose College four times before I realised I was going in circles. I have provided a pretty decent map you can print out.

Oxford city council

by Imbi

Oxford city council is located on St Aldate’s Street and you could get plenty of information about city from this place.
The website is http://www.visitoxford.org/oxford/isite.nsf/default.html
There are plenty of information are there like transport, leisure and tourism.

Stratford Upon Avon. This was Shakespeare's wife's cottage. We saw a postmodern version of a Midsummer Night's Dream. It was amazing. People wore buisness suits and flowers grew out of the ground on stage. Completely new take on an old story.

One good way of announcing that you are a visitor is to buy some of the 'university' paraphernalia from the tourist shops throughout the town centre. Students' loyalty is to their college, not the university!

St.Mary's Church

by evaanna

When you have seen the university buildings and are a bit tired of the touristy and noisy city, come to Iffley to enjoy its peace and quiet. Situated on the Thames, it can be reached by boat from the pier by Folly Bridge or just by bus. See the interesting Iffley Lock but don't stop at that. This little village boasts a wonderful little church built in the Norman style, with some ancient stone decorations, and an interesting graveyard. Note the little staircase on the right that was meant to be used by lepers attending church services.
Don't miss the most recent addition - the beautiful stained-glass Nativity Window by John Piper and David Wasley dedicated to St Mary's Church in 1996. The window shows animals on a Tree of Life greeting the birth of Christ each in its own voice:

'Christus natus est' , 'Christ is born', crows the cockerel.
'Quando, quando?' 'When, when?' asks the goose.
'In hac nocte'. 'Tonight.' replies the crow.
'Ubi, u-u-ubi?' 'Where, where?' hoots the owl.
'Bethlem! Be-e-ethlem! baas the sheep in reply.

Underneath you can find this inscription:
'Let man and beast appear before Him and magnify His name together.'
