Rental bikes
by Hannah_b
Hi,
i'm going to Oxford for 2 weeks and I'm staying with a guest family. They live outside the city center and since everyone seems to ride on bikes in Oxford,i was wondering whether it's a good idea to rent a bike? And does anyone no any bike rental companies...
Thanks for the tips
Hannah

One or two hire places here:
http://www.dailyinfo.co.uk/guide/shopping/bicycles.html
Up to you whether you want to hire one though. Depends on how confident a cyclist you are, and how far out your friends live. Buses and walking will be just as good, if you don't fancy dealing with the traffic.
Travel Tips for Oxford
Philip Pullman' Dark Materials
by Gwenvar
Years ago I read Philip Pullman's Dark Material book series. The well-known story starts in Oxford, an Oxford in a parallel world that is. It tells of that Oxford through a young girl's eyes and has made me dream of such a place where anything can happen, where the thin lines between realities are easy to cross and where learning becomes an extraordinary adventure... ;-) Well worth the page turning, in my opinion. And soon to come to our local cinemas.

We took a class field trip to...
by bluefelt
We took a class field trip to the Roman city of Bath. Some of the kids even drank the water, which you can purchase. They complained of a strange taste in their mouths the rest of the day. Doesn't take a genius to know that, guys. Bath was a fun place to see.
Books
by barryg23
Bookstores abound in Oxford, and you could spend all day browsing here. In addition to the usual high street stores - Waterstones, WH Smith, Borders, etc - there are numerous second hand shops, and a few smaller speciality shops.
In terms of quantity of choice and quality of selection it would be hard to find a better bookshop anywhere than Blackwell's in Oxford, especially for academic books, though they are fairly expensive. Borders is great, in that it opens until 11pm, while for bargain books, try Oxfam or The Works.
Visiting an 'Open Garden'
by GeorgeW
On Saturday and Sundays, and sometimes in the week many homes and colleges open their gardens for charity. The 'National Gadens Scheme' is countrywide and several Oxford colleges and gardens in the locality of Oxford participate in the scheme.
You can see some beautiful gardens and see local people enjoying the flowers and having tea and cakes. All this at very reasonable prices and for charity.
Check the local paper 'The Oxford Times' 'Weekend' section for details of 'What's On'. The paper comes out every Friday and is available in the library and all news shops. See also on their web page
