Mobile Phones/UK Sim cards
by brugerd
How is the cell phone reception in Oxford. Are there certain networks that have better reception/coverage than others. Does it matter which "company" I buy my sim card from? It seems like "mobile world" has the best deals for UK sim cards, but how is the coverage using mobile world at oxford?

Mobile network coverage maps on this link:

Mobileworld coverage map here:

It's not one of the most common networks in the Uk (O2, Orange, Vodaphone, T-mobile etc) so I have no personal experience of reception in Oxford.
Travel Tips for Oxford

The University buildings are absolutely marvelous. A favorite place to take photos is atop St Mary the Virgin Church, which sits on High Street just west of the Radcliff Camera. You can, for a modest fee, climb the very small circular stairway to the top of the bell tower. There is a walkway around the top affording views of Oxford most tourists could only see from this venue. There is too much to see for a short visit. I've only had about 4 days there on two trips. I've only scratched the surface, but it's perhaps my favorite city.
The Views From St. Mary's Church...
by coceng
There are 127 steps to go up the tower of St. Mary's Church.
From the top, we can see excellent views over the city of Oxford !
These are my photos, my own views from my camera, through my eyes to the top; on the tower & descending down...
There are some fantastic figures & grotesques statues adorning the exterior of St. Mary's Church...
All nicely decorated !
Zealots on Cornmarket Street
by King_Golo
You may find it weird to include a tip about Oxford's zealots in my pages. Well, I've done it for a reason: Oxford has an astonishingly large selection of zealots, and all of them are roaming Cornmarket Street. They won't annoy you personally if you don't stand still in front of them for more than a minute, so you can still visit the area for shopping or the like, but they are loudly presenting their world views whatever the weather.
It's interesting that there are not only Christian zealots in numerous kinds, but sometimes also Muslim zealots and even Atheist zealots. It's fun stopping for some time close by and listening to their theses. One black guy with a strong African English accent holding only a Bible in his hands tells passers-by day in, day out that Jesus has died for their sins, while an old man piles up loads of leaflets and brochures on a foldable table and underlines his message (basically the same as the one before) with drawings and pictures on a pinboard. The Muslims advertise Islam, the Atheists oppose all other opinions and try to convince passers-by that listening to the other zealots doesn't make sense as there is no such thing as God or Heaven and the like.
I will try to provide a more detailed description about the zealots later - they are, in such a high number on such a short stretch of street, unique to Oxford.
Don't Believe all you read...........
by barryg23
.........about Oxford Students. There is a scene in one of Colin Dexter's Morse books where Morse is describing the idiosyncracies of Christ Chursh. He tells Lewis that fellows there are called students and that Christ Church is 'The House'. Whereupon meeting a Christ Church graduate, Lewis refers to it as 'The House', and the student tells him that no one but a pedant would refer to it as that.
Anyway, my point is that a lot of the things that guide books claim about Oxford are not really true. No one I know says they 'read' for whatever degree. More coming soon....
It's Only a pub,,but.
by RPW
The Berkshire house pub on Abingdon Road is not too far from the town centre, however it is really somewhere that you should go to for many reasons.
You can get great beers and wines.
Eilish will do you excellent food.
You can watch all sports.
It has live music at the weekends.
You can park fairly easily here.
It's near to the river.
You don't ger ripped off like in town.
They will even give you accomodation if they have the rooms available.
