The Fleece

Lovely, if slightly expensive, accomodation

The Fleece was very easy to find and a delight to stay at. The room was lovely - with a cushy purple armchair, a tea making table, and a television it seemed more like a miniature apartment than a hotel room. I really loved the armchair. :) The en-suite bathroom was a good size and very clean.

The hotel room had a window but it led to a small fire-escape/pseudo-courtyard kind of thing rather than to the outside, so we didn't get as much fresh air into the room as we would have liked, but that was all right for a short stay (two nights). Our room happened to be across the hall from a public balcony anyway so we could prop our door open for a nice breeze if we wanted.

I think it was about £40 per person per night, which is a bit high for my tastes but we did get good quality for our money. Next time we are planning on staying at the Marlborough as it is estimated to be about £30 pp pn, and we liked their pub section when we went there for dinner one evening.

You can see in the photo of the room that they attached two purple cushions to a bar on the wall for some reason - we're not quite sure why, and it was a bit annoying but not terrible.

Unique Quality: The Fleece has a downstairs restaurant/pub and a seperate building for private parties. It also has a car park in back which was able to accomodate about 20 cars. There are two heavy doors between the pub area and the guest rooms, so noise from downstairs shouldn't bother you. The staff was quite friendly and seemed to enjoy their jobs. A full English breakfast (or any part of one that you should desire) is included in the room rates. They don't have porridge (my favourite breakfast food) but they do have cereal, yogurt and juice available downstairs in the mornings, also included in the room rate.
