A fantastic experience
The Feathers at Ludlow claim that this is the 'most handsome inn in the World' maybe not in the entire World but most definitely in the UK! This Jacobean building has been entertaining guest for centuries and is still an important meeting point for Local groups. The famous Jacobean frontage has many ornate carvings and balconies although some of these have become a little crooked over time!
We arrived a little earlier than the 3pm check in time. We were greeted by the friendly receptionist who was able to store our bags behind the reception desk for us. She offered to take our details in order to save time later.
We were allocated room 212 on the second floor. To say this exceeded our expectations is an understatement. It was a large room which consisted of a four poster bed, seating area, table with hospitality tray, flat screen tv and large dressing table with hairdryer in one of the drawers. There were two lovely stained glass windows spanning the length on the room - I was surprised to see these had interior glazing which kept out the noise of the road in the morning. The rather unique quality of this room is that the floor is sloping - if you look up at the room from the outside you can clearly see why! This was not a problem at all but If you are unsteady on your feet there are some more modern rooms to chose from. The room was lovely and clean and nice and warm which was essential in deepest darkest February. The Feathers is reputed to be haunted by a ghost who is jealous of female staying guests, luckily it was having a rest from haunting guests during our visit!!
There are a number of bar areas in the oldest part of the hotel, each with a great roaring log fire in the winter. There is also a lovely bar/café area in a newer adjoining building - this is also a great place to relax.
We stayed on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis (we were fortunate to purchase a deal at £99 for one night on Amazon local). The inclusive dinner was 2 courses and coffee but we added on a further course for £7.95 each. The food here is absolutely delicious and can be recommended. The breakfast was also delicious and offered a wide choice of healthy alternatives to the 'full english' such as porridge, haddock, fruit salad etc.
The staff we encountered during our visit were very efficient and friendly. I would really love to stay here again in the future and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.
Unique Quality: Crooked floors and stained glass windows.
Stay the night in a renaissance Inn
70 pounds for a nights accommodation hurt quite a lot, but I did get to spend the night in a very special place.
Breakfast is included in the price, and I found the service to be very friendly and helpful.
Bathrooms include both bidet and loo, and shampoo, soap, bath gel and moisturiser are included. Tea and coffee making facilities are in the rooms, and I found a trouser press in the corner too.
Unique Quality: The Feathers Hotel is a wonderful building built in the early 16th century. It became an inn towards the end of the century and has been expanded and renovated over the years. The floors and ceilings are kind of droopy, and you have to wend your way through the passages to your room, but the atmostphere is lovely, and the member's lounge room is amazing. Above the fireplace is an intricately carved 16th century mantlepiece that it is believed came out of the local castle.
Best of all, the staff at the Feathers will hook you up with James. (see my other Ludlow travel tips to find out about James..)
