"Historic Oswestry"

Oswestry is located in North Shropshire 5 miles from the Welsh Border. The town ,situated beneath the foothills of the Welsh mountains ,was alternately in English and Welsh hands until it settled in England in 1535. There is evidence of settlement nearby at "Old Oswestry" long before this however . This huge Iron Age hill fort is thought to have been occupied from 550BC right up until the Romans arrived in 75AD. In 642AD the Christian King Oswald who was killed by the pagan king Penda . His body was hung from a tree - Oswald's Tree - since corrupted to Oswestry. An Eagle is reputed to have picked one of his arms and dropped it. A spring bubbled up and is known as Oswald's Well.
