  • The drawing room, Windsor Hotel - Bath
    The drawing room, Windsor
    Hotel
    by pedersdottir
Step into the drawing room of the Windsor Hotel and take a step back in time. It's not every day that the Jane Austen dancers come by to perform. When they do, this setting is picture perfect. Sir Walter and Elizabeth Elliot would have been pleased to take tea here.

At the Windsor, Regency Townhouse style comes to life. Silk draperies reflect the glow cast by polished sconces. Rooms are bright, comfortable and inviting and bathrooms are well-supplied. Up under the rafters a perfectly charming single room offers an incomparable view over the boulevard that is Great Pulteney Street. Linger in the breakfast room while you decide whether to head up the street to the Holburne Museum - down the street to the Victoria Museum or across Sydney Gardens to stroll along the canal. The location is ideal for a scenic walk in any direction.

Rear rooms face the greenery of the Recreation Ground. Parking, bed and breakfast are included in the rates.

In the lower level, SAKOURA is the (surprise!) contemporary Japanese teahouse that serves sukiyaki and other 3 course set menus priced at L25 per person. It is open from 6:00 - 10:00 pm Tuesday to Saturday, and requires reservations. Phone 422100.

  • Escape into Eden - Bath
    Escape into Eden
    by pedersdottir
Hills surround the city of Bath. To the south of town, across the River Avon, lies the area described in NORTHANGER ABBEY as "....Beechen Cliff, that noble hill..."
Located on the lower reaches of that noble hill is the aptly-named Paradise House Hotel. With its carefully maintained gardens and lovely view over the city, this very popular guest house seems like a bit of heaven on earth.

No two rooms are alike. Ranging from a standard double to a glorious 4-poster turret suite, room rates vary correspondingly. (A kingbed mini-suite with whirlpool tub was L 95.) All receive the same attentive service from managers Mark and Rebecca and their staff.

Daily fresh flowers and linens in the breakfast room, a cosy fire in the sitting room, a personal TV/VCR in each room and full access to the beautiful gardens gives every guest the feeling of being welcomed into a cherished country home. The proprietors, Dave and Annie Lanz, also own nearby OLDFIELD'S Guesthouse, where guests receive the same personalized attention. Although a 'bit' distant from Bath city centre, the location is walkable - uphill- from the train and bus stations. If you have the time, climb to the park on top of Beechen Cliff for an unforgettable vista over Bath and its beautiful hills.

  • Queensberry Hotel - Bath
    Queensberry Hotel
    by pedersdottir
    Great location and 'good vibrations'.
Built in 1771 as a townhouse for the Marquis of Queensberry, the hotel is quietly situated close to the Circus and the Assembly Rooms. Original Georgian plasterwork sets the tone. Shades of teal, chocolate and indigo create the syncopation. A handsome mix of contemporary light and dark wood furnishings give an uptempo feel to this place. Renovated baths are spa-like. The visitor quickly realises that the Queensberry is a privately-owned establishment that prides itself on individual comfort and personal service. Yet for all the embellishments, prices are reasonable. Double rooms are L 100-140.

Take a stroll in the 'secret garden'. Read the paper while savoring your coffee in the library lounge. The noise of the outside world does not penetrate to disturb your meditations.

The Olive Tree restaurant in the lower level
offers compact portions of modern cuisine in a blend of English and Mediterranean flavors. Lunch menus are priced from L13.50. Dinners feature 3 courses at L26.50 but a la carte items are also avaliable.
Oenophiles will enjoy the eclectic offerings served at the handsome wood and leather bar.

    Amazing window boxes!
    by pedersdottir
A tumble of technicolor blossoms welcomes you to the entrance of Pratt's. At the corner of Manvers Street and South Parade, the floral riot acts as a beacon to the hotel and its spacious sidewalk cafe.

Inside the visitor is treated to Georgian style as interpreted by Laura Ashley. While the public rooms on the ground floor are lavishly furnished in chintz, the florals (and the room sizes) fade as you head up the stairs. 4th floor rooms are perhaps best avoided by claustrophobics! Baths are smallish on all floors but come nicely equipped. Rubber duckies are part of the decor.
L100 for a single room seems a bit high, but consider the fact that DINNER, bed and breakfast are included. The in-house restaurant does serve up fresh seasonal specialties though ( note the name: SEASONS). Vegetarian dishes are also available.
Pratt's is within easy walking distance of the train and bus stations and close to everything.

Built in 1743 as five separate townhouses, two of the buildings that now comprise Pratt's were already in service as boarding houses by 1791. Sir Walter Scott is said to have stayed here. In Jane Austen's day, visitors to Bath would have promenaded along the broad pavement out front to 'see and to be seen' -- hence the street's name: South Parade.
Today's visitor is more likely to enjoy 'people watching' which is fun to do on the spacious terrace in front of the hotel.

  • But the view is good.... - Bath
    But the view is good....
    by pedersdottir
The Francis belongs to the Macdonald Hotels group. It describes itself as 'the epitome of Georgian elegance in the very heart of Bath'. I would describe it as a substandard link in a mass market chain.

Located on Queen Square and handy to the shopping district on Milsom Street, the hotel presents a handsome enough exterior. Fittings and furnishings are in subdued tones of Queen Anne style. Perhaps the faulty plumbing was a clue that something was amiss...... Management has become accustomed to having a captive audience of tour groups. Staff seem to have lost the personal touch of dealing with an individual traveler. The bartender was surly. Diners directed to the lounge were left to wait 30 minutes before a waitress appeared. Upon arrival she managed to take an order from only 1 of the 3 tables where customers were seated. A further 30 minutes elapsed with no sign of either food OR waitress.

The hotel is reputed to be popular with the pre-theatre supper crowd. I have trouble believing it.

    View from North Parade
    by pedersdottir
Jane Austen might have recognised the building as the townhomes of 6 prosperous merchants of her time. Today the exterior has been renovated to a uniform look, but since the entrance was still obscured by scaffolding when I visited, the picture gives you a view ' from the doorway'.

Furnished in a contemporary casual style, the Abbey Hotel maintains some remnants of Georgian charm. It is perfect for travelers who want no deviations from the rack standards typical for the US. Parking and good-sized family rooms are available. Small single rooms begin at L 65 and doubles at L 90 (including breakfast).

Located at the center of town, The Abbey Hotel is very convenient to all information offices, the Abbey and Pump Room and the departure points for City of Bath walking tours.

    Francis Hotel, Queen Square

This is a rather old fashioned hotel in a great location. Rooms are spread out through the six townhouses that have been combined to create it, making for sprawling corridors and a somewhat confusing layout. To reach my room, for instance, I had to go up one flight of stairs (there is a lift as an alternative), along two corridors and back down a different flight (no lift here though). Once there I found a good sized room with a comfortable double bed; a small bathroom with slightly faded appearance and an apparently unmoveable shower tap, but nice toiletries and soft white towels; traditional décor and a small TV with very limited channels. It was more than adequate for my one night stay but if you’re looking for something a little fancier you might consider upgrading to a superior room for £15 extra on your bill.

My stay cost £87 (special government rate) and included a full English breakfast served buffet style. I’m not keen on eggs that have sat on a hot-plate so I stuck to fresh fruit salad and some excellent crusty bread with cheese, and was very happy with my meal.

    Door to our Jail Cell
    by saraheg77
This was a fun stay! The shower was a bit small, but hey, it was a jail cell! The breakfast was good and the owners were very laid back and friendly and worked with us for breakfast times and all.

It's an old converted courthouse so we got to stay in what used to be a jail cell! And there was a passageway that went from next to our room up to a trapdoor in the main room upstairs.

Athole Guest House: Georgian with a modern twist

  • The Athole Guest House - Bath
    The Athole Guest House
    by Rachael71
We stayed here for the first time in March 2005, and before we had checked out we were already planning when we could come again. The Athole is a large Georgian house built in the traditional limestone of the area, and inside many of the original features remain. However, they've not gone for the traditional chintzy furnishings that so many B&Bs in cities like Bath offer - everything is clean and modern, but somehow in keeping with the style of the House.

There are only four rooms so booking ahead is essential. We had the Pope room - a restful, buttery-yellow room, with a huge and comfortable bed, tasteful Klee prints on the wall, satellite tv, tea and coffee and a mini-bar (no alcohol).

The Athole is a 10-12 minute walk from the town centre, up a fairly steep hill, so it's perhaps not ideal if you have any walking difficulties. The owners, Wolfgang and Josephine, are really friendly and helpful and are happy to pick you up and run you back to the station free of charge if you arrive by train. They also have lots of restaurant recommendations and tips for things to do in Bath.

We paid £68 for a room inclusive of breakfast in March 2005., which compares very well with other b&bs and hotels in Bath.

The en-suite bathroom was the best I have ever seen in a British b&b - really modern and clean, with a fabulous power shower. I also have to mention the breakfast, which really does fill you up for the day. As well as the traditional fry-up, you can choose from pancakes, kippers, omelettes, home-cooked breads and special Swiss muesli. A better choice than most hotels provide at twice the price!

Another bonus is the free, secure parking - and Wolfgang is happy for you to leave your car there even after checking out, which given the parking situation in Bath is a real plus point!

Redcar Hotel: Redcar Hotel - Cheap accomodation

  • Updated By jo104 on June 20, 2007
  • It is difficult to find a hotel or B&B in Bath that will take a booking for only 1 night in the peak season. So this is the reason we stayed at the Redcar Hotel, despite mixed reviews, it was quite reasonable. As there were 8 of us we had 2 triple rooms & one twin which averaged out at GBP30 each. The breakfast that was included was ok & filling - although the scrambled eggs are a bit suspect.

Now for the negative part of the review, we were placed on the top floor. There is no lift and the rooms are stiflingly hot, we managed to grab a fan left outside but it was small & ineffective. The window only opened a small amount & a breeze was out of the question. I managed to do some improvisation with a coat hanger & forced our window to open to the max. The bathroom was a shower over the bath which was very slippy. Soap & thin towels were provided as is a hair dryer I think. There is big thick blankets which were of no comfort in a room which equated to a sauna. But even with all these circumstances I still managed to sleep, snore & talk in my sleep keeping the third person in the room awake :-(

There are no photo's of this hotel cause I was not inspired to take any. The beds are comfortable & the rooms are clean.
