Escape into Eden by pedersdottir Hills surround the city of Bath. To the south of town, across the River Avon, lies the area described in NORTHANGER ABBEY as "....Beechen Cliff, that noble hill..." Located on the lower reaches of that noble hill is the aptly-named Paradise House Hotel. With its carefully maintained gardens and lovely view over the city, this very popular guest house seems like a bit of heaven on earth. No two rooms are alike. Ranging from a standard double to a glorious 4-poster turret suite, room rates vary correspondingly. (A kingbed mini-suite with whirlpool tub was L 95.) All receive the same attentive service from managers Mark and Rebecca and their staff.
Daily fresh flowers and linens in the breakfast room, a cosy fire in the sitting room, a personal TV/VCR in each room and full access to the beautiful gardens gives every guest the feeling of being welcomed into a cherished country home. The proprietors, Dave and Annie Lanz, also own nearby OLDFIELD'S Guesthouse, where guests receive the same personalized attention. Although a 'bit' distant from Bath city centre, the location is walkable - uphill- from the train and bus stations. If you have the time, climb to the park on top of Beechen Cliff for an unforgettable vista over Bath and its beautiful hills. Amazing window boxes! by pedersdottir A tumble of technicolor blossoms welcomes you to the entrance of Pratt's. At the corner of Manvers Street and South Parade, the floral riot acts as a beacon to the hotel and its spacious sidewalk cafe. Inside the visitor is treated to Georgian style as interpreted by Laura Ashley. While the public rooms on the ground floor are lavishly furnished in chintz, the florals (and the room sizes) fade as you head up the stairs. 4th floor rooms are perhaps best avoided by claustrophobics! Baths are smallish on all floors but come nicely equipped. Rubber duckies are part of the decor. L100 for a single room seems a bit high, but consider the fact that DINNER, bed and breakfast are included. The in-house restaurant does serve up fresh seasonal specialties though ( note the name: SEASONS). Vegetarian dishes are also available. Pratt's is within easy walking distance of the train and bus stations and close to everything.
Built in 1743 as five separate townhouses, two of the buildings that now comprise Pratt's were already in service as boarding houses by 1791. Sir Walter Scott is said to have stayed here. In Jane Austen's day, visitors to Bath would have promenaded along the broad pavement out front to 'see and to be seen' -- hence the street's name: South Parade. Today's visitor is more likely to enjoy 'people watching' which is fun to do on the spacious terrace in front of the hotel. Door to our Jail Cell by saraheg77 This was a fun stay! The shower was a bit small, but hey, it was a jail cell! The breakfast was good and the owners were very laid back and friendly and worked with us for breakfast times and all.
It's an old converted courthouse so we got to stay in what used to be a jail cell! And there was a passageway that went from next to our room up to a trapdoor in the main room upstairs.

The Athole Guest House by Rachael71 We stayed here for the first time in March 2005, and before we had checked out we were already planning when we could come again. The Athole is a large Georgian house built in the traditional limestone of the area, and inside many of the original features remain. However, they've not gone for the traditional chintzy furnishings that so many B&Bs in cities like Bath offer - everything is clean and modern, but somehow in keeping with the style of the House. There are only four rooms so booking ahead is essential. We had the Pope room - a restful, buttery-yellow room, with a huge and comfortable bed, tasteful Klee prints on the wall, satellite tv, tea and coffee and a mini-bar (no alcohol). The Athole is a 10-12 minute walk from the town centre, up a fairly steep hill, so it's perhaps not ideal if you have any walking difficulties. The owners, Wolfgang and Josephine, are really friendly and helpful and are happy to pick you up and run you back to the station free of charge if you arrive by train. They also have lots of restaurant recommendations and tips for things to do in Bath. We paid £68 for a room inclusive of breakfast in March 2005., which compares very well with other b&bs and hotels in Bath.
The en-suite bathroom was the best I have ever seen in a British b&b - really modern and clean, with a fabulous power shower. I also have to mention the breakfast, which really does fill you up for the day. As well as the traditional fry-up, you can choose from pancakes, kippers, omelettes, home-cooked breads and special Swiss muesli. A better choice than most hotels provide at twice the price! Another bonus is the free, secure parking - and Wolfgang is happy for you to leave your car there even after checking out, which given the parking situation in Bath is a real plus point! It is difficult to find a hotel or B&B in Bath that will take a booking for only 1 night in the peak season. So this is the reason we stayed at the Redcar Hotel, despite mixed reviews, it was quite reasonable. As there were 8 of us we had 2 triple rooms & one twin which averaged out at GBP30 each. The breakfast that was included was ok & filling - although the scrambled eggs are a bit suspect. Now for the negative part of the review, we were placed on the top floor. There is no lift and the rooms are stiflingly hot, we managed to grab a fan left outside but it was small & ineffective. The window only opened a small amount & a breeze was out of the question. I managed to do some improvisation with a coat hanger & forced our window to open to the max. The bathroom was a shower over the bath which was very slippy. Soap & thin towels were provided as is a hair dryer I think. There is big thick blankets which were of no comfort in a room which equated to a sauna. But even with all these circumstances I still managed to sleep, snore & talk in my sleep keeping the third person in the room awake :-(
There are no photo's of this hotel cause I was not inspired to take any. The beds are comfortable & the rooms are clean.
