More about Bailbrook House

Brilliant Bailbrook!

by TripAdvisor Member SuffolkQueenie

We had a 3 night stay over the August Bank Holiday weekend - I was a little concerned after reading some of the other reviews online, but we were very pleasantly surprised by Bailbrook House. The staff were excellent - always very friendly, courteous and helpful. The room (in a separate building next to the house) was very spacious and clean, with views down over the gardens. The hotel is in a great location - there's a bus stop at the end of the drive, and it's about a 5 minute journey into the city centre. The breakfast was one of the best I've ever had in a hotel, with a wide selection of fresh fruit, cereals, continental pastries, plus an excellent full English option. The evening meal was superb, and very reasonably priced - about £25 a head.
Although at present it's a 3 star, it's going to be refurbished later this year and brought up to 5 star status - we will definately go back (if we can afford it!!) - I'd thoroughly recommend Bailbrook House as a perfect base from which to explore the beautiful city of Bath.

great olace

Wow! After a nasty, nasty London hotel, what a great place Bailbrook House was!! Comfortable, clean, extremely nice and helpful staff. Wonderful breakfast. We were here on a weekend and just about had the place to ourselves (and with 3 teenage girls, it was nice so they could be themselves...)
I just can't say enough about how we enjoyed the beautiful scenery, quietness. Now we are off to Liverpool and I dread it...

A mixed bag of treats

by TripAdvisor Member MrTangerine

Overall my fiancée and I enjoyed our visit to the Bailbrook House Hotel but our opinion may have been swayed by the fantastic city of Bath rather than the hotel itself. We arrived at the hotel quite early and were impressed by the beauty of the reception building. Unfortunately the bedroom itself was situated in a more 'modern' 1960's building round the back. The room and bed were large and spacious but rather bland.

We spent the day relaxing around the hotel and made use of the small but excellent gym and sauna facilities. The reception and other staff were all helpful and friendly but because there was a wedding going on at the same time, service was at times quite slow.

We didn't eating at the hotel in the evening choosing instead to sample the nightlife of Bath but the breakfast buffet the next morning was excellent.

I would visit this hotel again in the future.

Poor- brochure & website extremely deceptive!!!!

by TripAdvisor Member Donna2805

I am urging people to read this review before booking this hotel as it is extremely disappointing! Based on the hotel website and brochure, myself and my sister booked this hotel for my parents as a Christmas present and ourselves as a special treat. On arrival at the hotel it appears as a beautiful building set on a hill and we were equally impressed both with the interior of the main building and the efficiency of reception staff on check in. However we were a little curious when a staff member immediately provided us with a full listing of good restaurants in Bath instead of their own dining room. After sampling lunch we understood why. Everything outside of the main reception and conference room (advertised in brochure under dining) was set in what may be described as annex accommodation - similar to self catering lodges which I have stayed in at budget rates on adventure/team building weekends. Lunch was served in what resembled a staff canteen very slowly and very pricey ( £32.00 for 4 sandwiches and bottled water). Because of this we spent most of our afternoon in Bath search for a good restaurant for dinner. Rooms are large and extremely dated, quite cold and small portable tvs - this description is of a superior king room so goodness knows what the standard may be like! Breakfast was fine for 3 of us but not for my vegetarian sister! We complained on check out to the same efficient staff who checked us in and suggested that trade descriptions may be interested in their brochure! Staff were quick to be rid of us telling us that a Manager would phone the following day. He did this, offering the explanation that the hotel had just been taken over and hopefully in the future it would "become the hotel we had expected it to be! Overall experience extremely disappointed!!!!

Option on the outskirts of the city

by TripAdvisor Member Nige and Jane

We stayed at the Bailbrook whilst on a cycling tour - perfect for this as it is away from the congested city centre but close enough for easy access. The hotel feels like a converted conference centre, in attractive grounds and with large but somewhat functional bedrooms. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive, and probably a little unusually for a hotel there didn't seem to be a " typical guest ". Although the main buildings have some elements of historical character and charm, the hotel is essentially a functional option of reasonable relative value in a city where hotel accomodation is at a premium. The hotel met our specific needs very well.

A reasonable place

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed for a couple of nights earlier this month. We chose the Bailbrook because most of the hotels in the centre of Bath were full for the nights we wanted. Its a fair walk into town but buses go from the end of the drive and taxis were available if required.

Pluses: pleasant staff, very good evening meal and breakfast, clean rooms, fairly quiet situation.
Minuses:restaurant and bar were in a separate building, the bar area was more like a common room - large pool table, not much carpetting. Accommodation block and furnishings in our room were OK but a bit basic.

The whole place has the feel of being a conference centre that hasn't made the push to convert into a good hotel.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel with friends and we were all appalled.......The hotel rooms are OK...but all the food is awful....there was no one to complain to...the meal we had friday night in the dining room was luke warm and tough...breakfast was awful as well...someone does not know what scrambled eggs are either..when we complained we were informed that there was no one in authority to talk to and that there was a party next good at 9pm... the wine was the best part of the meal...we were still billed for the meal as well and again no one was around to complain to when we checked out!!!

No way to run a hotel....We will never stay there again. Although thought Bath beautiful and will return to the city..but another hotel.

Great Stay

by TripAdvisor Member flopsypc

We stayed here with a group of friends and attended the New Year's Eve Ball in one of the function rooms. Overall, our stay was excellent. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was spacious and clean.

The ball itself was excellent. We had a 3 course meal, which was good, although they cooked everyone's fillet steaks the same (well done- which is a vile crime in my opinion). The staff serving at the ball were also attentive and pleasant.

They served a late breakfast on New Year's Day. There was loads of choice, and it was just the ticket for a bad hangover!

Not romantic - for conferences!

by TripAdvisor Member JennieW

The website is very misleading in terms of the photographs, which make it look like a romantic georgian place in rolling hills. It's not, it'smore like a conference centre. The room was ok and clean but not great. And we ordered breakfast in bed which didn't come. Overall A HUGE disappointment. Only benefit was the pool table and friendly service in the bar!

Excellent Staff

by TripAdvisor Member Conquest1066

Our expectations were a former conference centre being converted to a luxury hotel. The old georgian house is beautiful, the modern bedroom block is less so but the room was spacious, clean and had a king sized bed. The staff are excellent. From reception, bar, restaurant and housekeeping they had the balance right between friendliness and courtesy. We did not eat dinner in the restaurant as it looked a bit utilitarian but it was fine for breakfast. The hotel is out of town but only £5 in a taxi. They are expecting planning permission in April 08 and the plan is to move bedrooms into the old house. Demolish the current bedroom and conference block and build new bedrooms in a style more sympathetic to the original mansion. I would love to go back then but as the hotel is to upgraded to 5 star I expect it will be expensive. As it is, I would recommend this hotel to anyone on a three star budget as in my opinion it currently feels more like a four star.
