From Bath to Heatrow by public transport

by londonlover

Hello, I need to get from Bath to Heathrow by 1:00 PM on a Wednesday in September. I checked the Brit Rail site, and it says I can take a train leaving Bath around 11 AM, and can arrive at Heathrow by about 1 PM. However, the details state that the first part of the journey is by rail, but then we must take a bus from Reading to Heathrow.

Has anybody here ever done this? If so, is the transfer from train to bus fairly straightforward in Reading, and is the bus known to usually run on schedule? Otherwise, does anyone know of an easier way to get to Heathrow from central Bath (for four adults)?

Thanks!

There is a train from Bath to London Paddington every hour, from there you can take the Heathrow Express. Not the least expensive choice, but the easiest.
Have you checked National Express? They might have direct coaches.

There is a National Express coach leaving Bath at 10, arriving in Heathrow at 12:25.

The bus from Reading to Heathrow is a perfectly normal and regular Railair service. It runs on schedule, and timings make allowance for known traffic conditions (ie the journey is timetabled for slightly longer at busy times). I have used it with no problems, and would most certainly use it in preference to going into London and then out again.

However, if the Bath train is delayed for any reason the coach will not wait (nor would any other coach/train link, so this applies however you travel). In that case you would simply get the next one.....they run about every 30 minutes, I think. The website for the coach is:
http://www.railair.com/
but your train ticket ensures your booking etc. You won't need to do anything else.

If you are worried about timings why not get a slightly earlier train from Bath?

O..........and the transfer is entirely straightforward. The bus stops immediately outside the station (there is a waiting lounge/toilet should you need it)and is well-signed from the platforms, less than 5 minutes walk from the furthest.

That's great--thanks for the info from both of you. I like the idea of the National Express coach straight from Bath to Heathrow just because of the simplicity, but the rail transfer seems easy enough, too. I've traveled by rail a lot in the UK, but for some reason I've never run into the need to do part of a journey by bus. I appreciate the info and advice!

Travel Tips for Bath

Oldest House in Bath

by greebo

The oldest house built in Bath in 1482 was occupied by Sally Lunn who baked her famous Bath Buns (extremely yummy, you can still eat buns made from her original receipe today) here in 1680. You can visit the kitchen museum in the house or eat in the resturant. Please do bear in mind the buns that are served in the restaurant are huge so make sure you have a good hunger on you

Drink from the fountain

Fancy a free drink of water - its not the same as the water in the pump room honest!!
This fountain is outside the Abbey and is a refreshing welcome in the hot weather although I did manage to get my top wet as the water shoots out at an odd angle.

So, there I was in Bath, fresh off the train. Everyone else walked straight up the road. Being my usual adventurous self I turned right, wandering past the rugby field and venturing into unknown waters - literally!
I never realised they had narrow boats at Bath but here they were and, you can hire them for weekends, weeks or just for parties (the big one is a restaurant).
An option you may consider.

Local buses

by grandmaR

We took a local bus from Victoria Park on the outskirts of Bath down to the train station. It cost 3 of us (two seniors and one child) £2.40, and I think it was only so much because it was two zones. There are also Park and Ride buses, but I dont know the cost for those.

Bathe Yourself in Fine Cuisine

by cryofthecelt about The Pump Room

Located on the ground floor of the ancient Roman baths, The Pump Room is an elegant Georgian resteraunt with fine food and good service. For a light dine, try their delicious variety of cheeses and crackers with creamy leek and potato soup (or the soup d'jour). For a more hearty fill, enjoy a four-course meal, prepared fresh for you by a gourmet chef. Also, don't forget to try the item for which the room is named - a small glass of spa water pumped straight from the old Roman baths! Cheese and crackers with leek and potato soup. Perfect for an appetizer or light meal. Perhaps the best cheese and soup I have ever tasted. Definitely one of the finest dining experiences of my trip to Britain.
