There is nothing 'Royal' about this hotel, it was only given that prefix because Victoria visited Bath (NOT the hotel!). It was designed by the renowned architect Brunel and is situated right next to the railway station, so is great for the centre of town.
We and our friends stayed here for double rooms at £70 a night, down from a normal £90. Even at that price the room is totally overpriced (though you do get breakfast thrown in - mine had a couple of hairs in it!), being small and pokey with the suspicion that the hotel is trying to cut corners at every turn with bog standard basic toilet paper of the cheap sandpaper variety and el cheapo gumboot tea (no herbal or Earl Grey etc). Indeed they seem so pleased that they're giving you a free bottle of mineral water - just one, between two of us! Is that because the drinking water is dodgy?
This place was probably worth £40 a night, given its location and the offseason - this was decidedly 2* accommodation and service!
Our friends had to suffer a duvet smelling of B.O., which they got rid of meaning quite a cold night. Their attempts at complaining were met with the usual surly British 'customer service' and it had to take a no-nonsense American approach from Lamb_Chop before they were even given free parking for the day! Did I say, you also have to pay £5 a day for parking extra?
For £95 a day in Cardiff you can get a swanky 4* room in high season including parking!
