One Day in Sheffield

by Skinke

We find ourselves with 1 extra day of travel during our trip to Yorkshire. Leaving Whitby toward London for return flight to USA gives us an opportunity to spend a brief time along a direct train route South. Our thinking was check out Whitby hotel early, short train somewhere in order to experience a different destination and next day long travel back to London ( we have already spent some tome there in the beginning of our trip ) Hotel in London will be close to Heathrow. We are interested in Sheffield because of its botanical gardens, the Wintergarden and Magna. Any comments from the VT gang would be appreciated in support of this plan as well as recommendations for hotel choices and things to do for an afternoon in Sheffield.
Thanks
Skinke

Re: One Day in Sheffield

It's years since I went to Sheffield but it is not too bad a place as i recall. Whitby to Sheffield by train is about 4 1/2 hours, Sheffield to London a little over 2 hours, so neither journey is too bad

What time of year though? It can be a bit wet and cold (even in summer some will say)so it's always a good idea to know somewhere to go that's inside. I usually opt for a museum. Once the 'steel city' of England, Sheffield and the area has a lot of history. Sheffield is the 7th largest city in England, not many people realise that.

Take the Whitby to Middlesborough train and when it terminates in Middlesborough change to a Transpennine Express and get off in either Northallerton or Thirsk. I have a page on Northallerton and so you can see what it is like - I have never been to Thirsk (other than stopping there when a train calls at the station but there are good Thirsk pages here on VT. I think Thirsk may be the the better choice of the two. From either Thirsk or Northalleton take a south bound Transpennine Express (every 60 minutes) for the 30 minute journey to York where you can pick up regular Cross Country trains to Sheffield. In Sheffield the Winter Gardens are wonderful as are the Botanical Gardens but apart from that I am not sure what else there is to do there. VT member Suvanki has a very good Sheffield page.

Travel Tips for Sheffield

Gatecrasher or the Republic as...

by joecooper

Gatecrasher or the Republic as it is known Sunday-Friday. It's a fantastic, massive club, amazing atmosphere. The toilets are a bit sick but that's all you can expect! Creamy Cocktails in Chaps with my big brother and a group of friends.

Bathing costumes for children

by eurotravels

If it's a sunny day and you have children don't forget their bathing costumes. They seem to love playing in the fountains at the peace gardens. (If you're taking pictures and they are of someone else's children please keep a respectful distance).

Sheffield Steelers

by Arm-Chair-Hero

Sheffield Steelers is an ice hockey team for this city. It is well worth a visit no matter what age you are....the game is very tough but does have a good family atmosphere to it. Tickets are reasonably priced too at around £10 pounds.
Apologies about the photo...it was taken from a mobile phone....better than my effort of none ; ) No equipment needed other than to sneak a couple of drinks into the arena....drink prices are quite high there like most other sproting venues.

Most people would not realise that within a 20minute car ride you can be on the outskirts of Sheffield where there is some beautiful countryside and old fashioned pubs/villages etc. Just head for Manchester on all main roads. (Snake Pass, Woodhead)

LLOYDS

by Bananz about LLOYDS

Lloyds is housed in an old building on the edge of the Devonshire Quarter. Downstairs there is a large bar area, as well as a corner with comfortable sofas and armchairs. Upstairs is a Mezzanine level with lots of wooden tables and chairs. The high ceiling and wooden floors make for pleasant surroundings for a leisurely lunch by day, or a pre-club drink at night. There is a mixed clientele of students and locals, young and older, who all appreciate the value for money of the bar's many special offers such as 2 for 1 on certain nights. I wouldn't say Lloyds is one of Sheffield's best nighlife spots, but it's worth popping in for a cheap drink on the way to somewhere else! Smart-casual
