Travel Tips for Sheffield

Football

by xxxsarahxxxuk

For God's sake don't mentio either of the two Sheffield Football teams, they're up and down the division tables like yo-yos but the fans for both teams stick by the team and don't like criticism much.

The Owls

by DUNK67

Sheffield Wednesday play their home games at Hilsborough in the English First Division.

Their nickname is The Owls because they originally came from a place called Owlerton.
The Owls play in blue and white vertical striped shirts. To watch the match the only equipment you really need is a good strong voice to sing your club`s songs and encourage the team and your eyes to actually watch the game, some people do take a pair of binoculars if they sit far from the pitch.
Apart from the above the club s encourage you to buy their merchandise to enhance your matchday experience, you can buy virtually anything from hats and scarfs to the full blown replica kit, which generally is updated annually.

The bear pit

by TimMiles

This is a less nice legacy of the Victorians. Hidden away in the foliage at the north end on the botanical garden is the bear pit. It seems now very chilling and incongruous with the rest of the garden. You can go inside it and look up at the walls - it is very claustrophobic and unsettling.

It was closed in the 1870s after two children fell in and were eaten by bears.

A Traditional Sheffield pub

by suvanki about The Bath

The Bath is one of the few city centre pubs that hasn't been turned into a 'theme bar' or minimalised trendy wine bar style.

The original building dates back to the 1860's, and became a hostellery around 1895. It's now a listed building for its 'outstanding heritage interior'!

Dark wood, tiled floor, stained glass windows, Real Ales and genuine atmosphere. Yes, you can even hold a conversation without having to compete with the music!

The small rooms get quite crowded- popular with locals, students, Real Ale fans. Good mix of ages and clientele.

Afraid that I don't get to visit this place as much as I'd like - my girlfriends prefer the wine bar/mass marketed places for nights out. Casual - come as you are!

Usual student 'uniform' plus a smattering of fleeces/ outdoor gear.

More Tapas!

by suvanki about Tequila

Re reading my other tips, I've realised that the majority are Tapas restaurants! Well, I love this way of eating, a bit of everything, and everybody sharing.....

I celebrated my birthday, with a group of friends, soon after the restaurant had opened (2003), and we had a brilliant time!

The staff are excellent, I've never been so well looked after ( even when I've eaten at some pretty smart "well known" places!), from first enquiring re the venue, pre booking, and throughout the evening! They were all helpful, polite and efficient, and seemed to genuinely care about customer service. (None of the forced "is your meal ok?" etc that we're usually subjected to at other venues, when the askee doesn't really care, it's just something they're required to ask each table)

Although the restaurant/bar is quite large, the area where we dined, was in a cordoned off corner, with about 6 other tables.
We ate quite early, but there was no rush for us to vacate our table. Later on, the bar area gets more crowded, and the music volume does become louder.

The owner, also has Mambo (previously Viva Tequilla) in Gleadless, a latin American venue, popular with hen nights, office parties etc...sombreros, singing, free sambucco etc!

Tequilla is NOT to be confused with the above!!!!! This venue is aimed at a more mature clientele, who are there to enjoy the food, and a pleasant evening

Mon- Thur 12.00 -14.30 1700-22.30
Fri/Sat 12.00-2400
Sun 1800-22.30 We all ordered 2 different dishes each, plus garlic breads, potatoes, olives etc.and shared everything between the 5 of us.The portions were much bigger than I expected.
We enjoyed all of the selection, I particularly enjoyed the mussels, and a tortilla, but everything was delicious!

With house wine and beer, I think the meal worked out at just over £14 per head, which was excellent value for the quality and quantity of food we ate, plus the ambience of the place.
Hope to return soon!
