You have to try an oatcake if you go to Stoke. Not like Scottish oatcakes, these are more like pankcakes but thicker - and more oatey! The best way to try these are straight from a proper oatcake shop that can be found all over the area, where you can watch them being made, but most only open early mornings. Oatcakes come filled with breakfast ingredients (cheese, mushroom, sausages, bacon etc). All Stokies eat oatcakes at some point and everyone has there favourite place to get them from.

The Roaches is an area of rock formations and hills covered in heather (at the moment) about 25 minutes drive from the centre of Stoke-on-Trent. It is very popular with rock climers as well as walkers/hikers as the terrain is quite varied. On a clear day you can see for miles and the views are quite breathtaking. You feel like you are a million miles from anywhere. Quite lovely!

You've probably never heard of Stoke on Trent if you are from outside the UK. It's a funny little place famous for pottery and Robbie Williams. People tend to dismiss it as a small town pretending to be a city (which isn't a million miles from the truth!) but as it is my home town I feel the need to share the good bits with whoever wants to know!
"6 towns or 1 city?"
Stoke is a funny place for many reasons. One of the most obvious is that we are officially a city (though we have no cathedral). Stoke is made up of 6 towns. Just to confuse things more the city is called Stoke ON Trent yet one of the towns is called Stoke UPON Trent. But there is very little there apart from a couple of Pottery Factories - the main shopping and nightlife centre is Hanley. Each town has its own identity but all some under the name Stoke-on-Trent. Confused? You will be!
