Good pub?

by johnandlynclarke

We are staying in Oakham but we plan to drive to Stoke on Trent to visit the china factories. What else do we need to see while we are there? Any GOOD antique shops or markets? And lastly, do you know a good pub for lunch and a brew?
Thanks

You could try going into Hanley, a small town not far outside of Stoke, which has a nice market and shopping centre, as well as a few nice little pubs. Watch out for any locals with six fingers tho......;-)

Thanks for your response. I see Hanley on the map so I will add it to our "things to do " list. We love small towns and good pubs.

Any other suggestions for things to do in Stoke on Trent?

China Factories to visit are: Wedgewood Barlaston and Factory shop in Longton, Royal Doulton in Hanley and Aynsley in Longton... just to name a few. A place of interest to you might be the Gladstone Pottery Museum also in Longton. if you require more detailed locations let me know and I can help.

Markets: Newcastle - Under - Lyme: Normal market on Monday, Friday and Saturday. Tuesday and Thursday is the antique market.

As for pubs there are just too many good ones to name.. have a look every hundred yards I'm sure you will find a good one!

Try having a look at www.visitstoke.co.uk that may be a bit of a help

Food

by SLK

The local food is the humble oatcake.

It's basically a thin savoury pancake. Best bought from an oatcake shop rather than the shoe leather ones in supermarkets.

The usual filling is bacon and cheese and the oatcake rolled. In fact anything from a traditional cooked english breakfast works well. Yum

Molly Leigh

by M.E.R.V

It was said that the last witch in Britain, Molly Leigh was buried here in St John's Churchyard, Burslem. She was born in the year 1685 and lived most fo her life in her dark cottage. She was said to be in need of an extreme makeover(yes, she's very ugly) and has been labelled a witch by the locals who found her lifestyle weird. After her burial, the priest return to her home only to find her sitting on her chair knitting! How freaky is that! There's a bit more after this but I'm not giving a history lesson here.

Up to today, many people choose not go near her grave although you will never miss some love dancing around her grave during Halloween. Certainly worth the visit but go in the day to be safe!

My home town

by SLK

"Home is where the art is"

The best thing about Stoke is that it reminds me that I'm living in a neverending Ken Loach film to the point that I really enjoy being anywhere but Stoke...

I enjoyed the room I shared in Turkey that was considered posh because it had a wardrobe and not a hook on the wall like the other rooms.

I live in the North of the city which means it's a little bit rural - again this is fine exept the buses stop running after dark and taxis cost a mint if you're planning a night out.

The fields and trees are nice but I get hayfever..... :-)
