Great location at the waterfront

While visiting my son we did some travelling and spent one night in the Salthouse Harbour Hotel in Ipswich. It's located right at the waterfront, you can see the harbour with the boats from all rooms. Only a short walk from the train station, the last part of the way is close to some really run down buildings which are under construction. It seems the whole waterfront area is being redone and they're not quite finished.
The hotel is very nice, friendly, helpful staff, a large! bathroom and a free dvd library. A good, warm breakfast was included in our rate.
Internet access is expensive. My son just needed to check his mails and maybe answer one or two, so he needed internet access for one hour the most. It turned out that you can only buy access for 24 hours at 8.50 GBP, which I thought was expensive.
However, that is the only negative point, apart from this we really liked the hotel.

Unique Quality: I really liked the view, especially in the dark you could see the lighted boats on the water, which was very nice.
The bathroom was the largest I have ever seen in any hotel in the UK.

More about Salthouse Harbour Hotel

A must when staying in Ipswich

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at the Salthouse Harbour Hotel just for one night and found it an excellent venue with quite a wow! factor. If you are visiting the town for pleasure or business or planning something special, a birthday, anniversary or have a significant business visitor there is probably no better place in Ipswich to stay. It is close to many amenities, and only a very short walk into town centre. The railway station is not far away. Situated on the new marina front it commands a prominent position.

The marina area is undergoing significant development but this does not distract from the ambiance and quality of this excellent hotel. We stayed in their penthouse room which will knock the sock off anyone - the room is outstanding and only surpassed by the views. Okay, that was their signature room and of course not everyone will stay in that room but the standard looked the same throughout. The restaurant was as good as you will find in Ipswich (and perhaps a long way beyond). Maybe the selection could be greater but their food was beautifully presented and very tasty. The wine list was more than adequate and will cater for all budgets. We particularly liked the friendly and relaxed manner of the staff who combined these attributes with courtesy, professionalism and a pleasing will to be helpful.

Highly recommended - don’t be put off by the somewhat commercial / industrial outside appearance - I believe it is a converted warehouse. Once inside you will be pleasantly surprised by the chic and modern decor.

Nice hotel but avoid the first floor bedrooms

by TripAdvisor Member IT-nerd-on-the-road

Nice hotel on the waterfront. Helpful staff and a very good breakfast provided in a relaxed environment. The rooms are comfortable and nice toiletries provided. Try and avoid the rooms on the first floor as the quay can be a little noisy at night. The lift is a little rattley but has been for ages. Well located for the centre of town and not to far to walk to the train station if needs be. DVD players in the rooms as well, no fridge though. Worth a try if in Ipswich.

Luxurious

by TripAdvisor Member Abbotts

We stayed at the Salthouse for two nights earlier this year while my partner was on business in Ipswich. It is positioned on the harbour front and has a bright, modern Reception area. Our room on the 4th floor was lovely. Trendy, modern bathroom with cool toiletries and a large bedroom with gorgeous furnishings and tv. We also had a rather good view of the harbour from our small window.

We ate dinner in the restaurant on our second night and it was excellent with a varied menu and good service, breakfast the following morning was of a good standard too (although not buffet style as you would imagine, table service instead).

All in all a great place to stay and close to amenities, although the car park was far too small and busy and there isn't anywhere else to park in the immediate area.

Restful and relaxing

by TripAdvisor Member Bertie3003

The Salthouse Hotel surpassed our expectations in everyway. As a refurbished warehouse we expected it to be heavy on the modern side of things and less on the comfort, however we were very wrong. On arrival we were met by a polite receptionist who quickly upgraded us upon hearing it was our wedding anniversary. We were given a fourth floor room with balcony overlooking the harbour - a great start to our stay. Although the area is being regenerated this does not distract from the beauty of the marina and there wes very little noise or disruption. The town centre and amenities were within a five minute walk.
The room was large and light with a comfortable bed and huge bathroom (shower and separate bath). We ate in the brasserie that night as the local restaurants were closed and enjoyed an excellent meal, there wasn't a huge choice on the menu but what was there was cooked and served well. Equally breakfast had a range of dishes to suit all types and as I struggled to make my choice I was advised to go for both. (Breakfast was included). The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly and although Ipswich wouldn't be top of the places I'd wish to visit again, this hotel would be. We booked via activehotels.com for only £85 so this was an absolute bargain of a get away, but ended up being worth at least triple the cost. Highly recommended.

Loved the Salthouse

by TripAdvisor Member Happy-places

We booked in here at the last minute and got a pretty good deal on the room rates for 2 rooms for a night. The hotel has been renovated to a high standard and it looks very smart from the exterior. The hotel is situated overlooking Ipswich Harbour and is close to several good restaurants and the town centre. Our room was a good size with an incredibly comfortable bed! It was decorated nicely and to a good spec. The restaurant in the hotel served some really good food - quite expensive but you get what you pay for! - and the service was pretty good. There is a large variety of good wine and the menu was varied. There is a nice lounge area that you can use which was like a gentlemans lounge with big sofa's and artwork. The area is undergoing a lot of rejuvination and the hotel is situated amongst some nice apartments with a lovely view of the yachts and powerboats. There is a good restaurant on the other side of the Orwell which you will need to pre-book for but it will be worth it! We may not stay again as we have the luxury of a lovely boat now but we would highly recommend this hotel to friends and anyone else who is looking for a decent place to stay.

Not bad for Ipswich!

by TripAdvisor Member Shinfield

We booked this hotel following reading the reviews. We managed to get a reduced rate and were pleased, as to be honest it would not have been worth the full rate for Ipswich. The room was comfortable and spacious, although the pillars within the room were a hazard to be expected in a converted building.

The hotel is a little style over substance and could do with paying a little more attention to detail, our TV reception was poor and whilst we were there using the lift was a lottery as 3 times we went to use it we could hear people stuck inside!

However, the hotel is a good choice if you are stopping in Ipswich, we were there to see family and to be honest there is not much else to see!

At last a decent hotel in Ipswich

by TripAdvisor Member White-family

We have stayed in various hotels in and around Ipswich over the years (my husband supports ITFC) with varying (mostly bad)results. Read about the Salthouse Harbour on tripadvisor and subsequently booked for last weekend - it is great, from the friendly staff to the spacious modern boutiquey rooms, excellent shower, first class breakfast (best fresh fruit salad in years, Suffolk cooked breakfast and Greek yoghurt with honey - no need to eat until the evening at the earliest). Could not fault it really. Lift is a bit slow but it wasn't really a problem. All in all highly recommended.

Wonderful location on the marina and close to Suffolk College. Great for parents visiting their children at college. Noisy nightclub nearby which closed down the next day. Great food in the restaurant.
