Travel Tips for Guildford

Puttenham

by barryg23

Puttenham is a small village in Surrey which lies halfway between Guildford and Farnham, and is a good place to stop for a break if you are walking between the two towns. The pub on the main street, The Good Intent, serves meals, though we only stopped for a drink as we’d already eaten. The pub was very busy though we did find a spot in the beer garden out the back.

Guy Fawkes with the Lions Club

"Wow"

I had never taken fireworks before - it was fun to try and succeed.

This was the perfect place to see fireworks on a grand scale without having to walk too far with aging parents.
We parked (for FREE) over at the Sports Center about one and a half hours before the event. Sat peacefully with coffee and cake, while watching the ice skaters dancing then the short track speed skaters. We then walked over to the field. Our center front view was excellent.

After the fireworks, the foot - car traffic took a while to disperse. But it was well worth the minimal donation for experience.

GUILDFORD

"Capital of Surrey!"

Guildford is the hub of Southern Surrey and the site of its most modern cathedral. It's a town filled with good restaurants, wonderful shops and some very interesting things to explore. Not only that, but Sir Laurence Olivier grew up there after having been born in nearby Dorking.

Guildford architecture - old

"or... Sunday morning wanderings with a hangover"

On Sunday morning we had to check out by 10am from the YMCA, but the festival didn't start until 12am so we had a chance to have a wander the quiet streets of Guildford - along with a several other befuddled festival revellers.

I'm afraid I didn't have the wherewithall to get a guidebook to Guildford so I have no idea what these buildings are - this one was taken in the main shopping street.
