Weekend in Newcastle

by FearrBolg

Hello all,

Just a quick question: A group of us are planning on heading to newcastle for the stag party of a friend of mine. None of us have been there before, so i was hoping that we could get some suggestions on where to go. It'll be the usual type of thing, a few drinks, abit of a laugh and an opportunity to give him a good send off before his wedding in July.

Any ideas on where to go? Any pointers to take into account.

I haven't been to Newcastle for a year or so on a night out, but the Quay Side always seems to be busy....there are plenty of bars down that way. So i would suggest that you definately go there for a could of drinks?

this is great, sounds like we are on for a blast of a weekend!

we have the flights from barcelona booked :-) By the way, I suppose we can forget about 25 degree balmy evenings, right??

Thanks again for your help,

saludos a todos,

Hola a todos,

Jordi = Geordie, eh? thats class!! I'll have to remember that.

By the way, I was wondering if there is anyplace that might be a good place to get a bite to eat in before heading out? I suppose that people do not eat as late as here (in BCN dinner is from 10pm on), but maybe it is the same?

Any restaurants that might be a good laugh? i hear there is a Baja Beach there....also there is one here in barcelona, is the same thing? Very popular here for stags/hens....could be a good choice

Anyway, any suggestion is welcomed,

hasta luego,

geordie :)

It is cheaper to live in Newcastle than in other parts of England.
We have everything here you could wish for (except the weather).

Travel Tips for Newcastle upon Tyne

Bridges Galore

by sandysmith

Seeing the view of all those bridges was something I'd wanted to see for ages - it really does symbolise Newcastle.
The 7 bridges that can be seen from the Gateshead Quayside are:
Gateshead Millennium Bridge
Tyne (King Gerorge V) Bridge
Swing Bridge
High Level Bridge
Metro (QEII) Bridge
Railway (King Edward VII) Bridge
Redheugh Bridge

3 other bridges - Scotswood Bridge, the A1 western bypass, and the Newburn Bridge make up the total of 10 bridges that connect Gateshead to Newcastle

This view was taken from Gateshead Millenium Bridge.

For some lovely old images of the Tyne Bridges check out this website.

St. Nicholas' Cathedral

by steventilly

St. Nicholas' Cathedral dates originally from the 12th century, at which time it was simply a church. It was consecrated as a cathedral only in 1882 and much of what can be seen now dates from the 14th century. It's rather small size by comparison to most cathedrals and many churches, is due to the war torn nature of the area in medieval times. The 'crown spire' is one of only four in the country, it is the earliest of them (1470) and is regarded as being the best.

When visiting Newcastle pay...

When visiting Newcastle pay attention to the maps that are around the city centre as they give locations of interesting places to see.
Such as the Discovery museum in Newcastle near to the Centre for life. Here you can learn about the history and shipbuilding heritage of the region.

Victorian station architecture

by sourbugger

When the 'Metro' (subway) was built, a number of the suburban railway lines were taken over to be incorporated into the mass-transit system.

Thus many of the stations had a former life, before the Metro and were much grander affairs than the newer Metro stations- especially when they used to process large numbers of passengers visiting the coast.

There are thus a series of stations around Whitley Bay and Tynemouth areas that retain much of their original Victorian architecture - and are well worth a look.

Also see the tip in the shopping section on Tynemouth market.

MetroCentre – Gateshead

by keeweechic

MetroCentre – Gateshead was once Europe's largest indoor shopping centre.
Located just 3 miles south west of Newcastle.

This place was amazing and I spent many hours on a couple of occasions here (trying not to get lost).

The trains and bus serve it well. Take the Train to the Metro Centre. If travelling by car - Off A1 Western bypass.
