More about Matfen Hall

Exquisite

by TripAdvisor Member Despo

Just come back from a two-night break at Matfen Hall, where we celebrated my partner's birthday. Breathtaking views, immaculate spa and golf facilities, delicious food, friendly and polite staff (almost impossible to find polite staff in UK these days). We are already planning our next visit. It is a bit pricey but certainly worth it.

Nice but pricey!

My wife and I stayed for 2nights in August 06. It's a bit out of the way, about 20mins from Newcastle but convenient for Hadrian's wall. My main interest was in the reviews of the restaurant, and we booked a DBB deal for £200prpn which I think is very good for the standard of meals and accomodation.

I recommend the Matfen Hall for golfers and honeymooners. If you have an interest in quality food at a premium then the restaurant will not disappoint. If you have small children they may find the food a little too rich, and there are a few pubs nearby who can offer food much more cheaply, but you get what you pay for. You need to book a time slot in the afternoon because the dining room does not accomodate that many people, but the dining ambience is very good.

The standard of service is above average, but not exceptional. You have to ring down to reception in the afternoon to get a turndown service, but they still forgot on the first night. The bathroom is quite large with traditional fittings and very good toiletries supplied. We had room 8 which is on the corner of the building, and has views to the south (golf course) and east (garden) which we both liked. I would advise against anyone with mobility problems staying here unless they are guaranteed a room at the front of the property, because the hallways are very long and there are many stairways to negotiate.

The spa is very pleasant and we enjoyed some aromatherapy sessions, be warned these must be booked WEEKS in advance or you won't get in. The pool is a good size. Matfen Hall is popular for weddings and parties, and was quite busy during the time we stayed but noise was not a problem.

I strongly recommend booking as a deal with the hotel direct if you can. Overall a good experience and ideal for the surrounding countryside, Pennines and Hadrians Wall

A Relaxing Experience

by TripAdvisor Member Chorizogolf

Matfen Hall is an early Victorian stately home, converted to a high class hotel about 10 years ago. It has an 18-hole golf course in the grounds and a well-equipped spa complex, with 15 metre pool. Our bedroom was spacious and well fitted; the table d'hote dinner and cooked breakfast were of excellent quality; and the service was willing - if, at times a little amateur as many of the staff were young and foreign. The golf course looked easy - wide fairways and big greens - but it wasn't! Our only real grouse was that the course was very busy with a mixture of hotel guests, club members, discounted day green fees and corporate golfers. There was no attempt to give couples the chance of playing at a proper pace and it took the two of us up to 41/2 hours to play 18 holes. We booked through golfbreaks - a 4-day, three round package which was good value. Matfen is a pretty rural location which offers hotel guests lots of sightseeing opportunities within an hour's travel - Hadrian's Wall, Hexham Abbey, Kielder Water, Newcastle-on-Tyne and the wilderness of Weardale. All in all, it was a relaxing experience and we'd be happy to go there again.

Excellent Hotel and Spa

by TripAdvisor Member Anastie

Three years ago my wife and I got married at this hotel and we could not fault the hotel, staff, organisation etc etc. In fact it was 100% perfect for a wedding.
Since then they have spent millions on a new spa. Quite simply this facility has raised this hotels standard even further. The gym is very high tech. The cardio machines have TV screens too allow you to watch the station of your choice during the workout. Excellent. The pool, sauna, steam room, salt room and shower are again all excellent. Changing facilities again perfect.
The restaurant whilst not cheap has superb staff and the quality of the food is up there with the best. The only thing I would ask the hotel to change is that they allow smoking in the drawing room. As a non smoker I would prefer this area to be smoke free so I can enjoy my after dinner coffee in a clean air zone. The restaurant of course is smoke free!
Staff all very polite, In fact after a previous hotel disaster elsewhere Matfen felt sorry for what we had gone through and discounted the room and upgraded us.
We have previously stayed at Seaham Hall hotel and although that hotel has a better spa and the rooms are more luxurious and high tech. Seaham charges a significant amount more for that pleasure. Is Seaham worth paying the extra over Matfen? Well if your income is very high and you won’t feel the pinch of a £300.00 a night room then yes. But only just. Matfen is a terrific hotel and I for one would rather save the money and have a couple of nights at Matfen for my Seaham hall money.

Thanks to all Matfen Hall staff. Superb!

Great Spa

by A TripAdvisor Member

Hotel luxurious but relaxed. Perfect for golfers. Spa is fantastic because so clean and new. Staff very nice. Breakfast spread not as great as elsewhere, and muzak too loud and inapropriate for early morning. Conservatory lovely for lunch. Bedrooms fine.

Could be so much better!

We stayed 2 nights to attend a friends' wedding. As a wedding venue it was splendid and most of the service and food we received during the wedding itself was very satisfactory. However our bedroom was disappointing and there was no attempt to service it while we were there. Also restaurant service at other mealtimes was mediocre, to say the least.

Our experience was in stark contrast with a nearby guest house at which we stayed for the rest of the week, in which the service we enjoyed was exemplary, at a fraction of the cost.

Good value for money

We booked our one night stay through a discount hotel website, and a room in the newer part of the hotel cost us £90 (reduced from £160) for bed and breakfast. The room was a good size, you walk into a small room with wardrobes, and a place for your suitcase, and off this are double glass doors leading into a lovely bedroom and another door leads into a good-sized bathroom with bath and separate shower. It was one of the cleanest and well-equipped rooms we have stayed in. We ordered room service food which arrived reasonably quickly and was of good quality and nicely presented. The spa is nice and has recently been updated, although the tropical shower wasn't up to much! The beauty treatments sounded nice but I felt that they were very over-priced. Breakfast is served in the Library Room and was of a good standard. We had lunch in the Gamekeeper's Lodge but found the food disappointing. The staff were very polite and friendly and we would recommend this hotel to friends.

Fantastic day

by TripAdvisor Member lazytown17

We stayed here for 1 nght as part of a wedding group. The whole day was excellent from start to finish, the staff can't do enough for you, friendly and warm and very helpful. The hotel is lovely and the grounds are amazing, our room looked over the golf course and the gardens. Before the wedding we enjoyed a drink on the patio overlooking the golf course and then into The Great Hall, the civil ceremony went great and the reception was enjoyed by all. The food was first class and very well presented. The evening reception was downstairs in a quite small room which was poorly lit, if i had to think of any downfall to the day it would be this room,
Excellent setting and grounds are amazing, i would definately recommend this venue to anyone. Maften Hall is a marvellous location for a wedding, whatmore can i say !!!!!!
