Cheap accommodation in Newcastle?

by newone_

Hi to all kind people from Newcastle,

My boyfriend and I are planning to visit Newcastle for a couple of days in November to attend a NUFC's match.
I will greatly appreciate if someone gives me an advice where to stay in Newcastle. Since our budget is a quite modest one, we are looking for a cheap hotel or hostel only to have a nap for a couple of hours. Tried to find one via internet but there is no great varity of options. Is it so?
I would also appreciate some local information concerning the best pubs in the city?
Thank you very much in advace!
Can't wait to see this lovely place!

'Napping for a couple of hours' is not something which is commonly catered for in the UK, I'm afraid. You'll have to pay the usual daily rate, of course, and as this often includes breakfast it is not particularly cheap.

For hostels, try www.hostelworld.com Hostels will be by far the cheapest option, and there is now at least one in the city centre.

For all Newcastle accommodation listings look at the official tourist information website on:

Travel Tips for Newcastle upon Tyne

The Tyne Bridge

by yooperprof

This is perhaps the most famous of Newcastle's bridges, and certainly is a beautiful one. It was opened by King Goerge V in 1928, and when built was the longest single span bridge in the world. The bridges are quite striking, but talking to Georgies, I met a number of people who told me that they don't like to use them! Apparently there is still such local and neighborhood pride that it is considered a good thing not to leave the district in which you were born. (This is a phenomenon found in many other "river" cities I have visited or lived in.) On the north quayside of the Tyne is a regular market which is very busy on Saturdays. It's a great place to overhear the local dialect!

Saint Mary's Cathedral

by steventilly

Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral was opened in 1844. Built by public subscription, initially the money could not be raised for the planned tower for the Cathedral. Later in 1870 the money for this was bequeathed to the Cathedral and the tower was added shortly afterwards.

Scottish and Newcastle

by steventilly

Scottish and Newcastle Breweries (now Scottish Courage, so losing the "Newcastle" part, which is a real shame) are based in Newcastle and Edinburgh. Their Newcastle site, which includes both offices and a brewery stands adjecent to the football ground. S & N is now the biggest brewer in the UK and is ranked 8th in the world. It's most famous product is probably Newcastle Brown Ale (see 'Cultural Tips').

Newcastle United - The Magpies.

Join the majority of the locals in this football daft city and take in a game at the legendary St James Park.

Plonked straight in the middle of the city centre its pretty hard to miss this colosus of a stadium as it towers above mostly any other building in the area.

With its capacity of 52,193 you are immediately taken with the scale of the stadium and can easily see where the 40 million pounds spent on it in 1998 to redevelop it went too, namely two huge stands, The Millburn and the Sir John Hall stands.

Arriving in the stadium you are met by the welcoming site of a row of bars and serveries, a pint of Fosters pre match was much appreciated although note that you are not able to take alcohol to your seat, its only permitted under the stands. Pretty decent mince pie is also worth a shout for the hungry stomached. (Cheers to the young bloke serving us our pints who only charged us the price of a half pint with a knowing wink).

We got tickets for the East stand which is actually the lowest in height of the 4 sides to the Park but made for a good view of the match, Newcastle versus Charlton in the Premiership. Game was not up to much with Newcastle showing a distinct lack of cutting edge, eventually scoring in the 52nd minute through Keiron Dyer, only for Charlton to take the advantage away from them within 30 seconds of the restart, Dennis Rommedahl scoring in the 53rd minute.

Howls of Boo's went up at the final whistle as the digruntled fans trooped off to make for the numerous surrounding pubs. A Newcastle United Home Shirt, the famous black and white stripes, and a Newcastle scarf should see you alright :-)

A match ticket is pretty handy too, we paid £36 for ours from the ticket office, tel number below.

North Shields

by keeweechic

North Shields is a working fishing port on the North East coast of England. The North East of England sits on the original line of Hadrian's Wall and the end of the ancient Roman Empire.

From the 1800's to 2000 the area has displayed the highest growth and development.
