Indian relocating from Kent to New Castle - How good/safe/friendly is life out there?

by mumbaiya

Hi I am an Indian considering relocating to New Castle after having stayed for an year in Kent. I have heard a lot about the weather, beautiful countryside, culture, strong accent etc but not sure about people's attitude towards racism. I have a family(with a new born) so would like find out as much as possible about the place and be sure before I make a decision. I am basically looking at having a nice pleasant, friendly and peaceful life out there. I have travelled quite a lot and stayed in various western countries and haven't faced many problems till now, but many people have warned me about the racism being a major problem in the north and around New Castle. Would like to have my facts right from people actually living there rather than base my decision on rumours and hear-say. Would appreciate inputs on this.

You will find no problems, there is a strong communty who all look after each other, plenty of shops etc to cater for all your needs,I teach alot of the ethic community and you will find most of the community are now 3rd-4th generation geordies, Various estates in the area to suit all costs of housing,
LIke most cities there is the odd ocurrance of racism , as long as you support Newcastle you will no problems, any further advice let me know and I can put you in touch with a local community officer

I was going to say a similar thing as above.
All cities/towns/villages will have problems, Newcastle is no worse than others. Being a large city it will have a bigger number of imigrations than smaller, more insular towns/villages. And with its long fishing history a great deal of races have passed through its ports already.

I entirely agree. Any city is likely to be more tolerant of 'incomers' (whatever their origin/colour/beliefs etc) than villages, but I am sure you will find no more racism in the North/Newcastle than anywhere else in the UK. The vast majority of people are absolutely fine, wherever you are(as I hope you have already discovered in Kent).

Like the other 3 have said, you should not encounter any more racism in Newcastle than anywhere else in the UK. There are bigots no matter where you go.

The one thing you will notice however is the weather, it gets cold up here in winter.
A winter in Kent is nothing compared to the cold snaps you will find here.

Travel Tips for Newcastle upon Tyne

THE most remarkable,...

by NUFC

THE most remarkable, important, spiritual place in the whole of the North East is ... St James Park, home of the great Newcastle United football club. We have just extended our seating and the stadium can be seen for miles around the city - on home match games, you can hear the roar of the 50,000+ crowd all over Newcastle - spine tingling stuff Through all the years I lived in Newcastle, maybe the fondest memory would be walking my two bearded collie dogs, Sooty and Muffin down on Whitley Bay front every morning very early in the summer. Whitley Bay is sort of crumbling away now and can look a little tatty, but nothing beats watching the rolling waves just sitting looking out to sea.

Life

This building is the International Centre For Life. It's the story of DNA and evolution. It's fully interactive and takes you from 4 billion years ago to present day! It uses A/V presentations, workshops and live presentations to tell the history of all life on the planet!

More information is given in the 'Must See Activities' section.

Of stotties and pints of OJ

by sourbugger

The Stotties are not , as their name might suggest as sub-species of the Geordie tribe.

I remember them well from student days, When college cooking dropped to the level of complete muck - stotties would come to the rescue.

It is in fact a largeish white flattish bread, native to the region which can be filled by just about anything edible.

Greggs the Bakers are usually given the credit for reviving the food on a mass-scale although they are also available from many other cafes and shops.

You can also find freshly squeezed orange juice in Newcastle - in pint milk bottles.
I believe the local dairy do it as a sideline - and very useful too !

Northumberland's beautiful...

by mcharlton

Northumberland's beautiful coast and countryside make the County a walker's paradise offering everything from challenging long distance walks across the hills to gentle strolls along the silver sands of an uncrowded beach. Many suggested walks are included in the wide range of books available from the Northumberland On-Line Gift Shop.

Unlike many other countries, England is crossed by a vast network of public footpaths which provide open access to the countryside. It is illegal for farmers and landowners to do anything to restrict members of the public from using these footpaths and local authorities (like Northumberland County Council) are responsible for ensuring that all paths are kept open and useable. There are no less than 3,000 miles of footpaths and bridleways in the County, suitable for walkers, which provides some indication of the variety available. All these rights of way are included in the Ordnance Survey 'Landranger' and 'Pathfinder' series of maps which are available from the Northumberland 'Virtual' Gift Shop. You are welcome to come enjoy walking in Northumberland but please always follow the Country Code. It is especially important to stay on designated footpath routes and to keep dogs on leads when there is any livestock (farm animals) present.
